Protestors Gather at Wildberries Today Due to Viral Video of Employee Detaining Shoplifter

A group of protestors gathered at Wildberries marketplace, a popular grocery store in Arcata, this morning about 10 a.m. to protest what they say was an unnecessary physical response by one employee to the attempt by a minor to shoplift a container of milk.

A video began circling on social media three days ago after a post on Reddit of the video claimed that a “Manager of store violently assaults minor in broad daylight for stealing a small bottle of milk under $10.”

Demonstrators talk with a person leaving the parking lot of Wildberries Marketplace in Arcata on Saturday following leaked video of an alleged teenage shoplifter in an altercation with a store manager was posted on local media sites.

The Lost Coast Outpost reported that the video was from last September and that the mother admitted that her daughter did shoplift.

A second video purporting to show the same employee with another alleged adult shoplifter “from over a year ago” can be found by clicking on the right arrow on this r/Humboldt Instagram post.

Reddit also posted a leaked memo from Phil Ricord, the owner of Wildberries, to staff. In it, he states, “As a result of input from staff and management, shoplifting controls have been revised to eliminate potential physical confrontations.”

A post on the subReddit Humboldt shows what purports to be a memo from the owner to the employees.

According to California Law, a shopowner may detain a suspected shoplifter forcibly. “A merchant may detain a person for a reasonable time for the purpose of conducting an investigation in a reasonable manner whenever the merchant has probable cause to believe the person to be detained is attempting to unlawfully take or has unlawfully taken merchandise from the merchant’s premises.” A website by Shouse California Law Group states, “During a lawful detention, a merchant can: examine any items a person tried to take, and conduct a search.” https://www.shouselaw.com/ca/defense/laws/shopkeepers-privilege/

I am completely on the side of the employee; and these protestors seemingly don’t have any respect for the law or businesses that are trying to make a go of it. I hope the employee gets a raise and/or a reward for looking out for the store’s bottom line.

Can we expect any 50 something year old LADY worried about creeping bone density loss, and looming expiration dates to get DRY HUMPED by a virile herbal tea jockey every time we shop(lift) at Wild Berries !? I should SAY!

Soooo now it’s child abuse if you don’t let them steal what they want? I watched the video and the manager was trying to get the girl to stop and of course the THIEF didn’t want to be caught. The manager THEN grabbed THIEF and the THIEF tried getting away. Moral of the story is don’t be a THIEF, pay for the items you get and like magic nobody chases you out of the store, more than likely the clerk will say thank you, you get to continue to patronize the store and best of all you can sleep better knowing that your not a lowly THIEF.

The sign that the girl is holding up that says, ” buy one, get assaulted for free”…….that’s the whole problem, she didn’t buy SHIT! He didn’t just go after her for no reason.

I’ve always had pleasant experiences in wildberries, maybe because my mother didn’t fail society and thought me that stealing is wrong.

It was the pinning against the wall, it just looked really creepy for a grown man to do that to a teenage girl. It isn’t like she is stronger.

I also am sure she didn’t have to steal milk. She could ask someone to buy it for her outside the store. She can’t get someone to buy her milk in crunchy Arcata? Please, pull the other one.

I think they are both wrong and the adult should be mindful of the optics of pinning a girl against the wall.

Look at all the clowns that think it’s OK to steal. Try that at the store that is near me. You think that manager was rough? Citizens arrest is 100% legal in California, and so is reasonable force to detain the person. You WILL end up in handcuffs if I catch you!

That isn’t an issue when dealing with an anon. They might be a dog, you don’t know. When dealing with a person face to face, I won’t lie and pretend.

I also strongly believe women and girls have a right to single sex spaces away from males. I think they have a right to their own sports. I think women and girls need sex based rights that males do not need and I’m tired of pretending some men are somehow women in some magic essence way. It is insulting womanface. I would not put up with blackface why would I play along with this nonsense? Why would anyone put up with this nonsense? You are unkind to women.

Hmm, I see what you’re doing. I have a couple of millennial daughters myself and I raise them to not steal (yes, it starts at gogurt) and to be responsible members of society. If they got caught by Aaron at wildberries I would shake his hand and thank him for doing my job for me. I got caught stealing as a teenager more than once. Each time it was humiliating and probably extreme.

Consequences is a word that every kid should understand. That way decision making can be more prudent.
All me peers regardless of family wealth were shoplifters. They stole for the fun of it. They wanted me to steal too. The crowd actually pressured me. Said I would be uncool if I didn’t. I just said no thanks and left them in the store and walked an hour home. There was no way I was going to let me father down. He had given me the talk about consequences a month or so before this exercise in social courage occurred. How me father thought of me meant more than what the crowd thought of me. Next day at school the crowd wasn’t there. They were all in county juvenile hall having all been caught with their jackets full of stuff they’d pinched! All ended up going to live with relatives in another location and I never saw that crowd again.

Kid Twist “…developed his own brand of celery tonic, a mixture of syrup and carbonated water…(still available today as Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray Soda), and distributed it to small shopkeepers at an inflated price. Any store owner who refused to buy the Twist brand had his business…to …and his… threatened.”

Well…this is the downside of a college town. You get a bunch of irresponsible morons agreeing with each other about the new definition of “child abuse” and “assault” and they can always pick up a few more idiots along the way. And then they all think they must be right because they agree with each other LOL! And they actually believe they are doing something good when they are actually embracing thievery and promoting crime as a right. Her mother! Her mother should be ashamed that her daughter has no morals or personal responsibility and wants to publicize that she is a wonderful thief and a victim. Bizarre! Her mother IS the problem. Aaron handled it well and deserves congratulations from all of us who are sick of seeing our society coddling the thieves. Thank You, Aaraon! And…Thank You, Phil! An employee has a legal right to physically detain a thief until the police arrive. The video did show evidence of the thief punching and physically assaulting the employee, the family should be happy they are not getting sued and losing their home.

Personally I think California should build a big tent prison in the Central Valley, anyone convicted of shoplifting or robbery should sentenced to 6 months of hard labor picking fruits and vegetables.

A lot of these commenters don’t understand how Wildberries has profiled many other people, REGARDLESS of whether they had actually stolen or not. There were many people, of different genders and race, who had shared their experiences with the crowd. Many were physically assaulted or accused of stealing DESPITE having a receipt. No, I do not think stealing is okay when it comes to local companies, but NO ONE should be pinned to the wall or thrown to the ground. I’ve worked in retail, I’ve been trained to handle a shoplifting situation and in NO WAY do the policies encourage ANY employees to use physical force. The proper approach is to confront the shoplifter, and if they do not return the item, call the police and let them handle it. Aaron Gottschalk does not CARE about our community and neither does Wildberries. Stand with the community instead of a store that endorses physical violence and avoids taking accountability. HOLD AARON GOTTSCHALK ACCOUNTABLE AND FIRE HIM.

So you demand accountability from the business that is being victimized, but do not demand accountability of the community members? The businesses that support the communities are more a part of the community than the community members that steal from the community.

If we allow shoplifting and stealing to be acceptable misbehavior the perpetrators will become more aggressive and the community will lose businesses (ex: San Francisco). The action of the perpetrator usually dictates how they are going to be treated. Comply with requests and no need for use of force.

Shoplifters suck, and I agree that shopkeepers should have the right to use reasonable force to protect their property. But that story’s not entirely factually accurate.

“Walmart CEO on rise in retail theft: Prices could go higher and stores will close.”

https://youtu.be/6iWgizk6kH4

Locally the “Humboldt Thieves Facebook page appears to show more retail theft and other as well than it used to.

The more Walmart stores that close, the better. That will help create more locally owned businesses, which in turn helps the community be more financially stable.

She was not “profiled”. She is a thief caught stealing.

In the video, Aaron confronted the shoplifter, who did not return the item. So Aaron called the police who handled it. That’s exactly what you said to do. It’s IN THE VIDEO! You must really hate this guy.

No matter what a person thinks of this incident the “cut of hand” comment is bizarre. Maybe you should move there.

It’s not a bizarre comment. There used to be very Stern consequences for shoplifting. In the United States we would hang people because these people were stealing other people’s livelihood.. Society has just become spoiled rotten and removed from world world consequences.

You have to remember, Arcata coupled with a herd of youngins from the college equals protesting everything. Not surprising, it makes the protestors think they are experiencing the late 60s all over a again or for the first time. The shoplifter person is lucky she isn’t in the Middle East. She would learn real quick, minus a hand. Stealing is a dirtbag crime on par with more serious ones because you are taking something which someone else owns, you are invading their space and taking their stuff. Scummy behavior which deserves a penalty. Good for the manager for protecting his business.

Young lady is going to have a problem if next time it’s the cops who try to stop her and she tries to kick them in the groin. Obviously not going to learn much from this experience since her mom is considering filing assault charges against the manager. Child abuse….not!

The surveillance footage on reddit would have had to have been subpoenaed, what is the case associated with that?

I think all protesters should post their address and leave the door open . It would save these poor folk from going all the way to the market when they need milk. SHOW YOU REALLY CARE. Stop hiding .

What does Cal Poly have to do with it?
Wild berries wouldn’t exist without the High School, and the University. So while this girl stole a jug of milk they’re gonna toss anyway, the store took in $1,000 from the other students. If you want to ban her shame her, and make her understand consequences, YOU got to play by the rules too. It’s the same with criminals beating a charge after experiencing excessive police violence. It overrides their crime. Did the manager discourage shoplifting I’m this case, or did his over zealous hunching on the teen backfire? He might lose his job over that jug of Kow-laid.

The alternative is letting her and others shoplift without consequence. This has the effect of causing stores that service many people to close.

So it is a selfish and anti-social act that victimizes the many to honor a subset raised to believe they are above the law that holds society together.

And the effect on this subset is to reward a personal corruption that will only get worse leading to their own moral and personal decay.

Clue: The Reddit leaker introduced that the stolen item was milk and under $10 while releasing a “grainy” version of the security tape, probably re-recorded by phone, to satisfy their personal agenda. Courageous whistleblower or lying back-stabber? Your pick.

I submit we don’t know what was stolen. That well-dressed student was hardly stealing to eat. And when someone detains you for a crime, kicking and punching is not the appropriate response. Waiting for the police is. As for the misandry, the “creepy” comments I see, it’s not okay to kick and punch just because you’re female. If you do, it’s entirely reasonable to restrain you against a wall and take you to the ground to avoid injury from your violence.

As for the mother and the protestors, I get it, stealing is not a problem unless it happens to you. How about if each of their neighbors came to their house and pulled a board from their fence for firewood and ran away. No violence. It’s only a board. It’s needed for heat. When it came time to pay for a new fence, I’m sure these social justice warriors would be singing a more selfish tune.

Let’s see the videos of him detaining a football player. I’ll wager on selective enforcement. A store policy that requires detention must be applied to ALL suspects.

So you’re implying the big bad store manager picked on a little girl because he was a coward. A store manager is probably much more afraid of spurious lawsuits. Also, as a former bouncer, I know a football player is less of a worry because he knows kicking and punching a store manager means jail.

Consider the stores in the bay area closing due to theft. Then there’s the mob store smash and grab looting. In San Francisco pilfered items are sold in open markets by the BART stations. Sure things could have been handled differently. But theft is theft, not to be justified or minimized.

Similar happened leading up to the French Revolution…careful that the unhoused and poor don’t continue to grow in number and in anger. Not saying she is poor or what her reasons were. And the mobs in bigger cities or wherever and the vast numbers of poor in the streets are a symptom of things our community has created, even materialism and greed can be mitigated or instigated by cultural values. Kids have been shoplifting forever and while it is so obviously wrong and thereby easy for keyboard warriors there are means other than only punishment given kids with better things to do are usually doing just that. Kids don’t usually shoplift for the fun of it and if so shows they don’t have good options for getting their energy out which is also community responsibility. Much easier to say the obvious “Shoplifting is wrong” “bad children” “Bad parents” yawn…not going to solve anything. Go upstream and try to understand. At least ask a question once in a while.

“Kids don’t usually shoplift for the fun of it ?” Of course they do. Always have. It’s part of growing up to learn the world is not your parent owing you what you want. And that taking from someone else does not generally solve what stresses them.

Right. Kids usually shoplift for fun, because it’s thrilling and makes them feel powerful, unless they get caught; then the thrill is gone, not too thrilling riding in the back of a police car, hands behind the back in handcuffs.

To the parents of the child shoplifting, If it were my child I would march her down to Wildberries to give an apology. Make her own responsibility now before she gets herself in a worse situation. One that you can’t help her with. Teach her how to make good choices.

It really does take a village to raise a child. This is a teachable moment. Use it wisely.

♥️? Prayers for your family.

I would warn her that it puts her in a dangerous situation with a grown man who may think he has some kind of psychological pressure over her. It ain’t worth it.
Set her down and watch “The Legend of Billy Jean.”

Nice comment. Maybe the school can counsel her in what career she’s interested in and she can put her energy into that. If she continues shoplifting, schools and employers frown on applicants with a record.

Don’t steal. In some countries they’ll take a finger, then a hand. A little physical restraint seems like minimal recourse.

I was going to write something pithy, but I’m going to Wildberries. I need to steal my lunch. Yay, no one will stop me! It’s a free for all! Phil’s laughing though; he’ll just keep raising prices to cover the losses.

The protestors are all probably under 25 and have no real concept of the real world. When they get older they will realize how stupid this is hopefully. Maybe they all shoplift also and donate want tomcat caught. LOL
