Eel River Wailaki Invite Community to Annual Meeting Saturday at the Mateel

Eel River Wailaki tribeThe Eel River Wailaki will be holding its annual meeting Saturday, January 7th at the Mateel Community Center in Redway, from noon to 5 p.m. The tribal non-profit is inviting all community members to attend and learn about the ongoing restoration projects and the cultural revitalization movement of Wailaki people, which blossomed in 2022.

Members of the Eel River Wailaki and its sister non-profit, Native Health, in Native Hands, are hoping to continue the momentum to restore balance to the landscape and its people, which is why they are reaching out to the community to bolster the collaboration between native and non-native people alike.

The January 7th community gathering is a potluck and will feature the Round Valley Feather Dancers with multiple speakers including members of the Wailaki Tribe, State Park Representatives, the Shelter Cove Resort Improvement District’s General Manager, the Institute for Sustainable Forestry, and others who will update on the groundbreaking collaborations between tribal members and the community.

The local people with indigenous ancestry have been a real asset to our community. I’m proud of them and many of them have been our great friends.
When I was young I had access to many people that had deep history in the Eel River Valleys. I wish that I had paid more attention to their stories. Possibly we will all get a “do over”.
