Radio Paradise Relocates to Eureka

Radio ParadisePress release from Radio Paradise:

Internet radio pioneer Radio Paradise is excited to announce its relocation to Eureka, California from Los Angeles, CA. Along with a new headquarters near the waterfront in Eureka’s Old Town neighborhood, they are launching a newly refreshed website, branding and a completely redesigned player for their popular DJ-mixed channels.

Now occupying a large office space adjacent to the historic Carson Block building, the radio station — affectionately known as “RP” by their listeners — is settling into the neighborhood, welcoming longtime and new listeners who stop by to visit the headquarters. The new space has plenty of plant-filled lounges and work areas for employees, which will also host the public during its planned “Open Studio” during Old Town’s Arts Alive, which falls on the first Saturday of every month from 6 to 9 PM. The Open Studio will feature a different local band or DJ each month, along with a planned karaoke night.

RP was founded in 2000 by William and Rebecca Goldsmith in Paradise, CA, and soon redefined radio for the internet era. Known for its eclectic DJ mixed channels, RP is also renowned for bucking the traditional commercial radio format. Free for all users, the station plays no advertisements and is solely funded by voluntary support from its worldwide listeners. With 300,000+ registered users and annual traffic to the site reaching over 3 million unique visitors, the station has solidly established itself as an internet institution. Throughout the years, Radio Paradise has been featured in Time Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and Popular Science — and they regularly make top lists of music streaming options. RP also sets itself apart from other services by offering the highest audio quality available online.

No algorithms are used to create RP’s channels. Instead, William draws on his over fifty years of DJ experience to craft the four channels currently offered. His DJ skills were honed during his time at well-known radio stations such as KFAT, KPIG, KLRB, WCAS, and KPOI. William is also known for inaugurating the world’s first full-time webcast at KPIG in August 1995. Currently, Radio Paradise listeners can choose from the eclectic Main Mix, Mellow Mix, Global Mix, and Rock Mix, all mixed by William in the new location’s studio, a late nineteenth-century vault in the Victorian-era headquarters.

In the near future, the station is planning to launch more channels, hosted by other well-known DJs, as well as a new interview-based channel, Radio 2050. This new channel will feature interviews, focusing on “doers,” not “thinkers,”  who are actually doing things to make the world a better place for future generations. The interviews, when edited and aired, will take the form of stories told by the subjects interspersed with music matching the theme or tone of the segment. These interviews will run 24/7 like RP’s other channels.

In addition to the new headquarters, website, channels, and Open Studio events, Radio Paradise has plans for launching a suite of tools on their website, developed over decades by William for his own production use, for listeners to curate and produce their own personal radio channels on the station’s website while utilizing RP’s extensive music library. In the future, select users will be granted the ability to add to the existing collection of over a million tracks, with 16,000 of those songs being in the currently active play library.

Perhaps the biggest change is the addition of William’s daughter, Alanna, to the staff of RP. “I’m very excited about the two of us working together. She brings a deep love and appreciation for music, a wide range of digital skills, a phenomenal energy level, and a tremendous enthusiasm for all that Radio Paradise is and can be,” William said.

I saw this place when I was in old Town the other day and wondered what it was. I still don’t really understand what it is after reading this press release, nor do I understand how/why they ended up in eureka.

Wow, I was a KFAT/KPIG listener when I lived in SC and Monterey. Pleased to see this announcement and wish the operation success!

Since their focus is on an international internet audience, it seems unlikely they will have the same kind of community connection as the Mud.

The death of AM may be EMI in EV’s, although ya never know for next-gen apps. CBRS is being squatted by 5G as we write. “What’s the frequency, Kenneth,” is monitized by the spectrum deal.

I tell everybody up here that they have no idea how blessed they are to have the choices they do on the FM dial. Not only KMUD (which has some awesome programmers) but KHUM and the other Lost Coast stations.

It’s absurd but true that Humboldt has better radio than either LA or NYC.

Radio Paradise is indeed an international station rather than local, but we plan to very much be part of our local community.

Stay tuned…

Hopefully they don’t try to do fund drives or whatever that might potentially draw local $$ resources away from the MUD.

Welcome RP! Glad to have you based in Humboldt!
Your inclusion in the Northcoast community enhances our artistic, business and entertainment profiles. Your addition to the ‘radio’ market, high profile and internet -based, will help create more awareness of similar stations, including our own Humboldt Hot Air! (https://www.humboldthotair.org)

People who listen to radio purely for music may find that what you are offering caters to their needs. Those of us though, who treasure LOCAL radio, that speaks frankly to and about OUR COMMUNITY will still have reason to listen to KMUD. (https://kmud.org).

And, while respecting your pedigree of KFAT, etc. experience, let us not forget our original and great KPHT in Laytonville (https://kpht-lp.com), where, like with KMUD, we can all LISTEN LIVE and ONLINE as neighbors keep us up to date on WHAT’S HAPPENING locally. (KPHT does it less since it’s a small operation. Yet those folks are right there in times of need!).

I wish you great success Radio Paradise! And believe that you will want to be a part of our radio community, one that respects the home grown stations we are kinda famous for. (And y’all thought we only had one kind of “home grown” up here 😉 ).
