Letter Writers Cite Drug use, DUI, the “Brett Act” and 602 pages of reasons why we won’t be voting for Brett Watson.
Courtesy of the Mad River Union:
A half-dozen prominent Arcata citizens, including one city councilmember, have issued a letter calling on voters not to re-elect City Councilmember Brett Watson. Watson is one of six candidates running for the two available Arcata City Council seats this November.
Watson’s problems went public last fall. Following his arrest for DUI and cocaine possession in August, 2021, an investigation concluded that Watson had sexually harassed a city staff member and subjected staff to inappropriate behavior. Stripped of all but core duties, his relations with council colleagues and staff have continued to deteriorate into bitter clashes and accusations at council meetings.
Numerous citizens have called for Watson’s resignation, but he has refused. He acknowledges having suffered mental problems, but says he is in recovery and is substance free. Watson has repeatedly accused other councilmembers and staff of discriminating against him due to his Attention Deficit Disorder, a cognitive impairment that he says makes it difficult for him to understand staff reports. He steadfastly denies the allegations of sexual harassment, and considers his outlier status a product of his diligent oversight of city affairs.
The letter rehashes the history, enumerates complaints about Watson and calls for his replacement this fall.
The letter:
Drug use, DUI, the “Brett Act” and 602 pages of reasons why we won’t be voting for Brett Watson.
1. On August 1, 2021 Brett Watson was arrested on DUI & possession charges.
23152(g) vc-DUI of both Alcohol & drug use
11350(a)-possession of a controlled substance (later reported as cocaine)
11364(a) H&S possession of drug paraphernalia (later reported as a smoking device)

Brett’s response to his arrest consisted mostly of excuses followed by a somewhat meager admission of guilt. A sincere apology to our community for putting people’s lives at risk was never issued. This is also not the first time Brett drove while under the influence. The investigation shows him admitting he would be driving while intoxicated. See Appendix 3, page 139 (page 198 of 602), for his exact words.
2. Brett Watson has shown that he has no regard for the CA Brown Act, the purpose of which is to make sure council decisions are made out in the open, in public, not behind closed doors. He violated the law and the spirit on multiple occasions, even joking that he followed the “Brett Act.” His disregard for the basic principles of democratic decision making has been startling.
3. In October of 2021 the rest of the City Council took a unanimous “Vote of No Confidence” in Brett Watson. They eventually removed him from all regional and city committees because of his unseemly and untrustworthy behavior. They felt he was not a good representative of Arcata.
4. An impartial investigation found Brett guilty of improper behavior towards other employees including sexual harassment. He confesses his love for one employee via text. See Appendix 3, page 40 (page 199 of 602). Brett disputed the findings and continued the harassment.
II. SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
It is undisputed that Watson engaged the conduct attributed to him by [redacted] and that his conduct was motivated by his romantic interest in [redacted] . It is also undisputed that Watson abused his power as a City Councilmember by expecting [redacted] to spend time with him outside of City Hall; to respond to his calls and text messages outside of regular work hours; to engage in communications of a personal nature with him; and to hug him each time they met in his capacity as a Councilmember and her capacity as the [redacted]. The credible evidence presented during the investigation establishes by a preponderance of the evidence that the allegations against Watson are sustained. P.3

5. An unprecedented number of citizens asked him to resign. He did not. Brett said he would not even consider it and then continued to further harass the employee in open session during the public meeting. Another unprecedented action was members of staff publicly asking for his resignation.
6. Brett has been and continues to be extremely disruptive in city council meetings. He has insulted and berated staff and he has insulted council members and questioned their veracity. Brett simply does not act as a member of a collective decision-making body.
7. Brett shows disrespect in his treatment of City staff. He harasses and berates them. He publicly accuses them of lying and hiding funds. This behavior goes against all written procedures and protocols for council members, and is unworkable, unseemly, and unproductive. It is unfair and demoralizing to City Staff, who have a right to a workplace free of harassment.
8. Brett hasn’t been doing the job for more than a year, he misses the maximum meetings allowed while still collecting the benefits. When he does attend meetings, he is often negative and does not play well with others. Due to his absences, Arcata went unrepresented for months with one of the JPAs. Councilmember liaison assignments are an integral part of the job and Brett left Arcata unrepresented.
Fellow citizens: Brett Watson does not represent the values of Arcata. We want to send a message that his behavior is not OK as an elected official (or anyone for that matter). We need to send a message to our staff that we appreciate them and support the work they do for our community, and we must stand up to improve their working conditions. Most importantly, we need to let girls and women know that they are valued and supported by their community and do not have endure harassment of any kind. We can send this message by not voting for Brett Watson.
Issues may divide us at times, but our deepest shared values unite us.

Do they actually think that is necessary?
They are typical liberals. They care more about holding opposition accountable than their own delinquents. They don’t know what necessary is, that’s why they do the stuff they do, delusional…..
Nonsense. He is a liberal so obviously you are wrong. I dislike whataboutisms, but what about Trump? Republicans refuse to hold him accountable, except for those brave few, including Cheney and Kinzinger. You have “LDS.”
Except he wasn’t behaving like a liberal. He was behaving like a self entitled conservative, you know a DINO. Democrat in name only
Accountable for what? The made up crap by the hitlary campaign? Doesn’t matter to a lib when they want you on the outs, it’s how they operate. You want to talk about trump fine, how bout your boy biden?!?! Seems like yall just like to pick and choose who to be upset about. You don’t care about reality. You care about narrative. I just hope he sues these people for slander.
hahahahaha LOL tell us what you really think ?
What about Biden? He isn’t a traitor like Trump. Trump had classified, top secret information regarding our spies and other extremely sensitive and valuable classified information in a closet!!! There is no reasonable comparison between Trump and Biden when it comes to lawlessness.
LYING DESPERATE DELUSIONAL TRUMPTURD MORONS ALL AGREE WITH YOU SIR
He is running so why not?
I don’t see what the big stink is about. This guy is a shoe-in for that council.
Glad to see this letter. Watson is a disgrace
And completely unfit for service… Just like Trump, he feels he’s done nothing wrong…
So he is like dementia Joe, he has a cognitive impairment that he says makes it difficult for him to understand. Why would you vote for him?
If there is a Stormy Daniels chick in this guys past, he should win.
Nonsense. Biden stutters and has trouble with communication. That does not mean he has a cognitive impairment.
Prominent Arcata citizens? Really? Like that’s something to be proud of? Ha, ha, ha ha.
There are very few folks from around here in Humboldt who are still alive who could actually make any kind of claim to prominence, and as an Arcata resident I wouldn’t say for one second that any of those 5 names on the letter qualify for prominent status. Captain Beefheart may have been our last living prominent person in Humboldt who of course passed away in Arcata back in 2010. If Sara Bareilles moved back to Eureka, Sara would most definitely be considered a prominent person locally. Any other nominees? I might consider Guy Fieri for that list, once he blows his last dollar on cocaine and meth and then has to move back to Ferndale and get a real job, but of course Fieri is so widely despised for being such a dimwitted bigoted [edit], he won’t make the list in the end. Humboldt has better taste than that! Guy Fieri sucks.
Slight correction to my last comment… 6 Arcatans signed that letter, not 5. My bad! (But adding one more author to the letter still didn’t help them find even one actual prominent person. LOL.) Yeah, it looks like some of our “big fish in a small pond” need some perspective desperately as they apparently think way too highly of themselves. Just because you made it on to a local city council in little old middle-of-nowhere Humboldt County or are a professor at a small college no one outside of the area has ever heard of doesn’t mean jackcrap, [edit] I’m not saying Brett Watson deserves any sympathy at all for being such a creep, but didn’t our local yokels in the Humboldt County Democratic Party somehow endorse Watson when he first ran and won (probably as a result of the official Democratic endorsement)? Can one of the HCDCC folks please explain some of their endorsement decisions? Because at this point it really looks like it’s personal friends endorsing personal friends locally, instead of giving the best local Democratic candidates their due for their service to the cause, community, nation, etc. That good ol’ boy network bull crap is one of the reasons most folks hate the Republican Party. The last thing the Humboldt County Democratic Central Committee should be doing is emulating that kind of corrupt and politically counterproductive behavior that the GOP is so well known for.
His political affiliation doesn’t matter. His actions prove he has no business in public office. Everything from the DUI to the way he acted afterwards has shown me he currently has nothing to say and should have nothing to do with leadership. Until he takes some time, cleans up his act and actually has something to offer should he be a public figure.
To put it into language he can understand, he nearly killed an officer, put many road construction workers at risk, refused to take real responsibility for his actions, made a back room deal not to spend jail time, and the list goes on. He’s made it clear he’s a POS. He deserves absolutely ZERO votes.
I completely agree.
Six communists calling out a socialist… Arcata is a dumpster fire.
You don’t really know what any of those words mean, do you?
Sounds like a well rounded arcatan
Never arrested with DMT, I see no evidence his wardrobe contains any articles from South Asia or Central America, square hair do, zero visible body mod, I don’t think this man represents the Arcata electorate at all!
Ha, I’m surprised there’s so many sensitive arcatans on here. I always thought our little town was better at laughing at
I laughed. Those folks are angel soft.
Is that a pig flying in the background of pic???
I don’t see where this guy’s behavior has anything to do with national politics. I do see where he is described as an incredible pain in the butt and borderline criminal.
Harassment and discrimination cannot be tolerated by public official nor by private individuals and groups working on public issues. It is particularly heinous when a journalist harasses and discriminates. I hope someone with the Mad River Union sees this.
The Mad River Union shared this letter to the editor with us.
I was verbally yelled at and told to leave the Mad River Union office by the editor last week when I came in to ask him for a civil conversation. He told me he didn’t want anything to do with me and to “get out of this office!” because I had questioned on social media his objectivity as a journalist on a local Arcata issue. I think that is discrimination and harassment.
FYI. I have now been blocked from the Mad River Union Facebook page. There may be an interesting story here.
How is publishing this letter harassment or discrimination? I see neither; It is appropriate for both the MRU and Kym to publish this letter. It is laughable to claim harassment and discrimination when that is exactly what Watson has been doing.
Arcata is in a sad state. To vehemently go after a person like this is despicable. To defame others to lift yourself up is schadenfreude. Let the voters decide, then live with it and compromise. Good on Brett for holding his head up in the face of this hatred.
Not sure what schadenfreude there can be had when he is still being a pain in the arse for the city and denying any wrongdoing. You think people shouldn’t call out bad behavior of politicians? Or are you Brett on an alt account? Or perhaps you are unaware of Brett’s trespasses? You can look up the stories for yourself over the last year …
Voting for Brett just to piss those clowns off. “Prominent Citizens” ha!
numerous citizens have called Alex Stillman’s recusal from Gateway Project double dipping. Arcata will always have a place in my heart but man, it’s getting some growing pains for sure. I’d rather have all the hippies getting baked than yuppies jockying for power
