Thunder the Wonder Dog, Made Famous for His Survival, Has Tragically Passed Away
A German Shepard from the Mendocino County Coast named Thunder became known nationwide in December 2019 after his then-owner shot him and left him to die in the forest near Caspar.
He would emerge days later, battered and bloodied, to an adoring public captivated by the endurance and resilience that prompted his moniker “Thunder the Wonder Dog.”
“Thunder” has lived on a three-acre, rural property in Shasta County for the last two years with his adopted mom Sheryl Armstrong running, playing, and loving life despite the adversity that marked his past.
Sadly, this last week, Thunder was diagnosed with terminal cancer by veterinarians at the University of California, Davis. They gave him less than a week to live. Two days ago, on April 9, he passed away.
Armstrong’s husband had passed away just months before she began following the story of Thunder and the terrors he experienced on the Mendocino County coast. She dreamed of giving him a home, of helping him heal.
Then, her dream came true.
She picked Thunder up two years ago and he “just threw himself in the car.” When they arrived at her Shasta County property, Thunder pranced and danced about his new home and he had been by Armstrong’s side ever since.
Armstrong would take Thunder on long car rides every day. She said he loved cows, looking at them, barking at them. He loved the backseat, what Armstrong called his “chariot.”
After the cancer diagnosis earlier this week, Armstrong decided to give him the best last days she possibly could. The day-before-esterday, on a forty-mile road trip, Thunder barked at cows, smelled tri-tip on a grill, and even munched on some of the BBQ delicacies.
Towards the end of the road trip though, Armstrong noticed he looked weak and tired, and he was not eating his tri-tip anymore. She knew it was Thunder’s time.
Armstrong made Thunder comfortable in his “favorite place in the world”, the back seat of his “chariot.” Armstrong laid by his side and a veterinarian administered a simple sedative. In moments, Thunder would peacefully pass away in his sleep.
Yesterday, Armstrong said she is still deeply in mourning. She keeps thinking Thunder is there, lying at her feet, waiting to go play fetch or run around outside. Instead, she said her home feels “emotionally empty.”
Looking back on Thunder, Armstrong is inspired to heal, smile, to laugh. Even with his history of abuse, he did not let “make him sad or not trust.” Instead, Thunder “chose to be happy.”
That’s what Armstrong said she intends to do; “I’m going to be like Thunder and choose to be happy.”
If any fans of Thunder would like to send their thoughts, prayers, and condolences to Sheryl, email her at [email protected].

Sooo sorry for your loss! Dogs are the best friend ever!
?
RiP Thunder.
Bawling…beautiful story. Thank you Sheryl for being amazing. ?❤
Thank You Mrs. Armstrong. You are my hero today.
Nooooonot thunder ?
I’m sorry but this whole Thunder the Wonder dog story & the prosecution of the previous owner just shows how stupid most people are. Why ruin a humans life because they tried to put their dog down and failed at it? People have put their dogs down by shooting them since the rifle was invented. Didn’t you people read Of Mice And Men? When you can’t keep your dog anymore it is cruel to drop it off at the dog pound where it’ll be scared to death for a few days before being euthanized.
This owners only mistake was not knowing how to kill her dog quickly & successfully.
The only reason Thunder got adopted was the story pushed by the local news. Nobody in Shasta would have ever heard of the damn dog.
When my german shepard was old & in pain we went for one last walk…just like George & Lenny, we talked about the rabbits.
He simply needed veterinary care; not a gunshot. He was an excessive itcher (hence, the cone) and it was “easier” for the previous owner to take him in the woods to shoot him, then get him the proper care. But to add insult to injury, he didn’t die. What kind of human would see the dog didn’t actually die, and not try to find him and fix what you started? Or ???? But I can tell already that nothing anybody says will change your thinking. You’re set in your ways. So happy Monday…….
You didn’t make a very cogent argument. First, this isn’t the 20’s so whatever your point was regarding a fictitious novel is invalid. Second, there are laws that protect dogs. You seem a bit sociopathic to suggest killing an animal for no good reason is acceptable. People that drop dogs off at the pound to be killed after they no longer want them are the people we should be protecting animals from. There is an ethical responsibility that goes with animal ownership which does not include the right to murder or maim if one sees fit. I hope you are not a “local doc” because you seemingly lack morality and see the value in all lives, human or otherwise.
“only mistake”…
Yeah, pretty small thing to leave a loyal animal in excruciating pain. Turn your back as he is begging you with his eyes. No big deal.
I hope you bothered to make a better shot than this lady. But if not, no big deal right? Not like it’s you that has to lay there.
We used to kill deformed babies too.
Let’s hope when you pass there is as little compassion as you show. You are truly an ass to even send this in.
You are one very sick person, with absolutely NO heart!!!
Judging by this comment, there is something seriously wrong with you. I don’t know you, of course, but man, this is a cold comment.
He had it coming for sure. I don’t like idiots or you for that matter. The story is about a sad dog’s life journey.
Martin, I was calling Local Doc cold, not you.
I am very sorry. Please excuse.
Not a problem! It’s a very emotional subject and I think we all have some pretty strong emotions regarding that comment.
Wow dude, you suck. The story you cite does not apply. This dog didn’t kill anybody and wasn’t facing torture and the death penalty. In fact the dog wasn’t even terminal, just needed some vet care. I hope they chase down your IP address to make sure you have no animals or small children anywhere close because…you are sick. Seek professional help, please
Read Rainbow Bridge. Old oakie rancher attitude. “Take em out to Boot Hill and blast em, whether they are old and dying or young and weak and unable to keep working.” In any case, your rancher bs is dying out and going extinct. Sooner the better.
We can learn a lesson from Thunder. Choose to be happy…
Thanks to this lady who loved this dog.
aaaahhhRRROOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo
May Dog have mercy on you and all the good humans in your life. There are treats and toys and sunny napping spots across the Rainbow bridge, and you can drink straight from a cloud.
Those KONG squeaky balls, like the green one in the top photo, are the Doggone best.
Now, on a stormy night, when we hear the sky rumbling, we will no longer Wonder what the Thunder is, but, will howl along.
So glad that he got to experience so much love and joy in his final years❤️ So Sorry for your loss
That story is making me cry. Such a handsome boy full of life until a mean and nasty owner shoots him and leaves him for dead. Sheryl, Iam so very proud of you for making Thunder’s life as wonderful as it could be, right up to the end. You are truly a woman with a very big heart. May God bless you forever. May Thunder’s spirit be with you for the rest of your life!
Martin,
you always have such nice words. Regarding another story, I didn’t mean it to sound as though you don’t know your Labs. I was merely commenting on the nature of Labs and their affinity for water. As far as feeding dogs treats, again, not aimed at you. It was more of a general statement, to the the ever growing new-dog-owner population. I know I’m no expert on Dogs, but, I’m sure I know more about my girl than a lot of folks know about their furry kids. There are times, plenty of times, I do nothing but watch her for long periods. However, I’m certain all Dogs know more about us than we do of them.
I think they do Bug.
He was so lucky to get those last 2 years with you after the life he had
And just a thought, Is shooting a dog in the head painless for the dog (he lived so no) versus giving him a sedative to slow his heart, relax him, put him to sleep, and then stop his heart? I think this dog answered the question because most people are ineffective at terminating a life instantly with guns, even oakie ranchers. People need to own up to taking care of another life, not treat it like an expendable object, and in old age, make the dogs passing like it was your family member, painless as possible with dignity.
I agree with everything you said after the parentheses. The first line hung me up. Is breaking a femur painless (you’ll live so no), is getting kicked in the groin painless (you’ll live so no), do you know any vets missing a limb, I do, ask them if it hurt.
If done right and quickly it is fine. One shot to the back of the head from very close up. Death is pretty much immediate.
The problem is 1. it’s hard to shoot your own dog. My grandfather always tried to have someone else do it while he was there except for one dog he didn’t like- it was vicious. In turn he would shoot other friend’s dogs for them. That way at least you and your dog’s last memory isn’t just awful. It was always a big deal and planned out with a lot of tears. 2. It’s not always done right and if so causes an awful lot of suffering in every way. 3. this is your best friend or one of them, hopefully. I think the worst thing would be for the dog to realize you’re killing him and feel betrayal. How absolutely awful. Which gets back to #1..
None of the vets here make home visits for euthanasia AFAIK, I called all I could find. However, some will do it on the back lawn of the clinic or in a vehicle if it is a hatchback or wide door van and you can be next to your dog the entire time. I gave my bigger dog 3 doggie vicodine and some valerian root capsules before bringing him in to be put down in a bed in my vehicle. Valerian root is like a drowzy happy pill unless your dog is allergic to it or has a bad reaction. If you use it try it well before you need it. If the vet had not agreed to do it in my vehicle I was seriously considering paying an addict to inject him at home. I did not want to to have his last moments frightened on that cold hard table.
I guess we need to plan ahead, just as we would for ourselves or an elder family member. Can you say the name of the vet? If not, was it local? So.Hum? Central Hum? No.Hum?
Oh the things we can learn from dogs, if only we take the time to understand. To the Magnificent Thunder, and the Heroic Sheryl Armstrong, you both are forever and ever connected… a match that spans Heaven, Earth and Beyond.
