[UPDATE 11:03 a.m.: One Lane of Southbound 101 Closed Near Dyervillle Overlook] Traffic Is Backing Up After a Pursuit Resulted in a Crash Needing an Extrication on Broadway in Eureka This Morning

At approximately 9:45 a.m., law enforcement was pursuing a vehicle on Broadway through Eureka when a vehicle crashed though we aren’t sure whether it was the pursued vehicle, the law enforcement vehicle or a non-involved vehicle. We are monitoring reports over the scanner and sending reporters to cover the situation.

An extrication is needed, according to the scanner.

An ambulance is responding Code 3 (with lights and siren).

UPDATE 10:03 a.m.: The pursuit originated at the Holiday Inn, according to Officer LaFrance of the Eureka Police Department. The crash occurred between an officer’s vehicle headed southbound and another vehicle. Two people were injured including the officer and taken to the hospital

According to the scanner, the suspect vehicle, a black Impala, fled the area.

UPDATE 10:10 a.m.: Northbound Broadway is being diverted at Harris. Southbound is one lane at Vigo and Henderson is closed at Fairfield.

UPDATE 10:15 a.m.: Law enforcement located the vehicle, a black Chevy Impala, and continued pursuit. The vehicle exited into Rio Dell but then officers lost sight of it. They are now searching.

UPDATE 10:21 a.m.: The suspect vehicle has been seen again at Hanson and Palmer near Fortuna.

UPDATE 10:23 a.m.: Now the vehicle was last seen northbound 101 at Palmer Blvd., according to an officer reporting to dispatch.

UPDATE 10:26 a.m.: The suspect was headed northbound on 101 near Tompkins Hill. At one time he was going the wrong way but now is headed the right way.

UPDATE 10:27 a.m.: Now he is headed southbound just south of College of the Redwoods.

UPDATE 10:30 a.m.: Now passing southbound 101 near Loleta. Speeds of up to 120 mph.

UPDATE 10:33 a.m.: A Sheriff’s vehicle is trying to block the suspect, according to one officer on the scanner. They are passing Kenmar heading southbound about 100 mph.

UPDATE 10:35 a.m.: They are approaching the Hwy 36 cutoff.

UPDATE 10:36 a.m.: The suspect is wanted in connection with a domestic violence issue, according to someone speaking over the scanner.

UPDATE 10:39 a.m.: The suspect is passing Stafford approaching the overlook just before Jordan Road on Hwy 101.

UPDATE 10:40 a.m.: A spike strip is being deployed. “And it appears he ran over it,” according to an officer speaking over the scanner.

UPDATE 10:41 a.m.: The vehicle is smoking, the suspect is slowing down, and putting his arms out the window, according to an officer speaking over the scanner. The suspect lost a tire.

UPDATE 10:45 a.m.: The suspect is in custody but the northbound Hwy 101 is blocked. An officer is requesting a tow for a black Impala with three blown tires.

UPDATE 10:51 a.m.: The EPD is requesting an evidence tow. This will protect the contents of the vehicle in case they are needed to be used as evidence against the suspect.

UPDATE 10:53 a.m.: Traffic over the scanner sounds as if southbound 101 is at least partially blocked. We’ve got our reporter headed to the area and will update as soon as we can.

UPDATE 10:55 a.m.: Northbound traffic is open, according to an officer.

UPDATE 11:03 a.m.: Northbound is open. One lane of southbound is closed, according to our reporter, Mark McKenna, who is stuck in southbound traffic.

I’m guessing domestic violence isn’t the only thing he will be charged with now. Hopefully Humboldt County will actually take him at the jail instead of handing him a ticket and wishing him success on his next crime spree. With a loser like Honsal in charge, it’s doubtful.

Praying for a full and speedy recovery for those injured.

He is under the policies of the dumb ass Governor. However, Mendocino County is keeping people in their jail, so yes, it falls on Honsal’s incompetent ass to do the job in Humboldt.

Neither is stating not keeping criminals behind bars is incompetent. It’s a law and order thing. Stating Honsal is incompetent and The Governor is a dumb ass isn’t political, it’s being far too kind compared to reality.

You don’t really enjoy talking down to people, right? I hope not. Think about it, just for a second Joe. A lot of disturbing things have been going on and law enforcement officers’ hands are tied. Not all offenders with violent felonies are being held in these un-precedented times. It is a valid concern that these people will continue their crime sprees.

Traffic was backed up from that area all the way back to Wabash at the 4-way stop=lights Mega traffic headed to Broadway on Fairfield I was just trying to home bottom side of pine-hill Hope all involved will be ok Thank you Kym for your quick updates You “ROCK”

This wreck was horrible for all involved. Equally horrible was the absolutely incompetent job EPD did directing traffic. I stopped and asked what an open route was to my destination. The officer turned me down a road into a far worse gridlock where I was chewed out by another officer for going that way. They made a bad situation much worse. I would hate to see what would happen if there was a real city wide emergency. The chief needs to send his officers to remedial traffic control school.

I doubt it. It’s hard to lawyer up to meet the skills of the firms retained by municipalities. If that person gets a new truck and some dough, it will take a long time. And the results may not be that great.

We need a new policy for safety for our community and our residents. If the risk involves public safety a policy should be in place to stand down until a later time. It could have been any of our families in the crash and I don’t feel that we should have to be subject to such recklessness. We don’t need any more reenactments of grand theft auto pursuits on our streets. Grow up people.

I agree that Honsal is not doing his job. If that EPD rig was being stupid so he could get in on a high speed chase then absolutely EPD should be sued for large sums of money and lifetime medical. I imagine every cop in the county was strung out behind the Impala, frothing at the mouth to be in on the kill.
Honsal seems real adept at getting in front of a camera but nothing else.
My supervisor has already heard my feelings on Honsal vs Mendocino but he’s kind of a loss also.

EPD should be sued…and you don’t even know the whats. Circumstances alter situations. And someone evading instead of pulling over is a red flag…the continued circus to the south another. Break off pursuit, and ten miles later he head ons someone at 100+. Do the police now get sued because they did not attempt to remove the dangerous driver earlier? What caused the officer involved crash…guy in truck have music too loud, didn’t hear sirens, pulled into path?

Honsal is doing the only job he can. Finally got people shipped off to prison that had been holding in jail because of covid. Not like he has all of the choices.

Too many unanswered questions for you to proclaim judgement.

Why not try to be fair? Many incidents like this are happening across our country they are hard to understand, much less deal with.
These people , police and EMT’s, firemen and women, have the most difficult job. I bless them and their efforts to help others in trouble.

Eureka’s citizens just passed the sales tax measure so they have 9 million per year forever to waste on cop crashes and lawsuits. What a wonderful happy future to look forward to!
Also, the Remif insurance fund for Eureka is just going to LOVE this accident.
