Red Salmon Complex Nearly 4,000 Acres, Still 0% Containment

2020-08-05-NWCalifornia-Red Salmon OutlookRed Salmon Complex is 3,919 acres and 0% contained burning within the Trinity Alps Wilderness on the Six Rivers and Shasta-Trinity National Forests. Crews are utilizing direct containment strategies, strengthening indirect lines in the wilderness using minimum impact suppression techniques, and continue to work with resource advisors to avoid disturbance to cultural resources. Firefighters are opening previously constructed control lines from past fires outside the wilderness as contingency lines. California Interagency Incident Management Team 14 continues to make COVID-19 precautions a priority at all incident camps by screening all personnel daily and implementing recommended measures to prevent coronavirus spread. Community and firefighter safety are a top priority of both the incident management team and the national forests.
The Red Fire is 3,178 acres and 0% contained. Crews continued firing operations last night making progress on the north flank of the fire along the Lubbs Trail and the 10N01 between Salmon Trailhead and Black Mountain. Firing operations will begin again today. This fire is the most active of the pair with small group torching and short terrain driven runs with backing on the south flank towards the Salmon Fire.
The Salmon Fire is 741 acres and 0% contained. The fire continues to hold in its current fire footprint. With the most activity occurring on the south portion in the Eightmile Creek drainage. Firefighters will continue direct line on both the southwest and southeast portions of the fire from Backbone Ridge down to Eightmile Creek and Salmon Summit Ridge to Eightmile Creek.
Weather: A weak low pressure remains over the area bringing morning fog and low clouds limiting visibility for air operations. Temperatures are trending slightly cooler today with higher relative humidity which will slow firing operations on the north flank. A slight chance of thunderstorms exists through this afternoon.
Air quality: An air quality monitoring specialist is providing daily smoke forecasts and air quality information for the surrounding communities. Reports can be found here: fires.airfire.org/outlooks/NWCalifornia
Closures: Big Rock River Access has been closed in the interest of public safety as it is being used as a dip site for helicopter operations in the fire suppression efforts on the Red Salmon Complex.

On the general topic of fires, looks like there’s one up towards maple creek, with maple creek rd closed.
We won’t be mad if they say they are letting it burn, I mean there’s nothing out there let nature take its course.

Is it smoky on the coast?
North county coast was blessed with foggy drizzle early this morning. Natural air filter. But, you can tell there is fire on the landscape by the cast in the sky. Pink in the fog.
I’m assuming the thin band of fire on the ridge east of Black Mt is a backburn and the afternoon wind direction will push the head of the main fire right up that canyon to the backburn. However, the spot fire near Whitey’s Peak isn’t. If the winds push this north and east the backburn will become meaningless.
The ridge east of Black Mountain is the location of Lubbs Trail where the article says they are backburning. Lubbs trail was constructed by CCC in 1930s that goes from the Black Mountain saddle to North Fork Red Cap Road past the Trinity Alps trail head.
So you are no doubt right about the band of fire. Lots of timber to burn in upper Red Cap. If the fire gets out of the Wilderness, lots of older plantations to burn.
