[UPDATE; Tsunami Warning Canceled] 7.8 Earthquake Alaska; Tsunami Warning for Portions of That State; Still Evaluating if Threat to California

A 7.8 earthquake hit about 11:13 p.m. off the Alaska peninsula.
According to the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center, “A tsunami Warning is now in effect which includes the coastal areas of Alaska from Kennedy Entrance, Alaska (40 miles SW of Homer) to Unimak Pass, Alaska (80 miles NE of Unalaska).”
The National Weather Service in Eureka tweeted, “The Tsunami Warning Center is still evaluating what if any tsunami threat there is for California. Stay tuned…”
UPDATE 11:58 p.m.: The NWS in Eureka just tweeted, “The tsunami warning has been expanded to additional portions of the Aleutian Islands and south Alaska, but the potential impact to California is still being evaluated.”
UPDATE 12:19 a.m.: A woman in Alaska posted this tweet showing headlights of vehicles carry families evacuating ahead of a possible Tsunami. The photo was posted on Facebook first from Pat Williams Russell who lives in Homer, Alaska.

UPDATE 12:25 a.m.: NWS in Eureka tweeted, “Per the latest update from the Tsunami Warning Center, there is NO tsunami threat to the California Coast.”
UPDATE 7:21 a.m.: The National Weather Service announced early this morning that the Alaska Tsunami warning had been cancelled.

Wow that’s a good-sized earthquake! I wonder if the area had many human inhabitants.
Tsunami risk along the BC coast seems likely to be high. Guess you never know though– depends on the direction, how deep the source, etc. Better stay tuned.
The epicenter was off shore at a sparsely populated part of the state. It was felt in the southern part of the state but I have not heard of any damage or injuries at thus time.
I live in the South Central part of the state, not in the tsunami zone, and didnt even feel it.

I think the Shumagins, maybe King Cove and Cold Bay felt some serious shaking. Sand Point, any one hear from them?
