[UPDATE 6:05 p.m.: Humboldt County Roads Update] Today’s Roads: 101 Closed Near Leggett, Multiple Accidents, Chains in the Mountains, as Weather Conditions Worsen
UPDATE 1:45: Most roads now open. [See individual listings below]
Snow is falling across most of the Emerald Counties. The CHP is reporting numerous trees are down even in coastal areas normally unaffected by snow.
Remember last week when we had similar weather there were multiple accidents so please travel cautiously. Avoid travel unless it is absolutely necessary. There is a winter storm warning until 10 a.m. in Eureka. Areas in the mountains could have snow falling until this afternoon. We’ll update what we know below throughout the day in green.
Major Highways–Here’s What We Know:
At this time, most major roadways are closed or require chains in Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino and Trinity Counties.
If you are traveling and could take a photo of conditions and send it to us at [email protected], that would help other people make decisions about whether they should travel or not.
(Most information below is from Caltrans’ QuickMap. If you are heading to Oregon, check their similar site.)

Chains are required in our driveway.
Driveway? It’s disappeared!
If anybody’s going to open up an emergency shelter I’ll be glad to volunteer
The folks who organized it for the last few years announced that they wouldn’t try again this year as not many people showed up. So many unsheltered people have dogs that couldn’t be accommodated, and so many didn’t want to leave their camps for fear of theft. It’s an ongoing problem. Many believe a permanent camp is the best solution, with supervision, hot showers, social services etc. A lot of towns are doing this. And please don’t say they are lazy bums who should just get a job. Many are veterans, mentally ill or just can’t get themselves out of the hole. Some are drug and alcohol addicts. Not all, of course, but many. When I helped the ERCP clean up the camps this was very obvious.
Power out in South of Fortuna as of 7am.
Multiple outages all over the county. PG&E seems to have no time estimates for power return on any of them. Thank goodness for wood stoves- I’ll be cooking on mine today. Probably tomorrow too.
Lets hope that we don’t have a repeat of the 1964 flood, where 10 days of low falling snow had accumulated in the mountains and then a pineapple express atmospheric river dumped over 20 inches of rain up to 8,000 foot level melting all the snow.
Here in Trinidad the snow has returned to rain…….dammit. We were hoping to have a snowy beach party today. Oh well.
Quiet in Westhaven, we can’t hear the traffic on 101 or the waves this morning .
There was a couple of inches it’s now melting, rare sight on the coast!
Mercury news (San Jose) mentioned a possible AR event for Friday but NWS hasn’t gotten that far out ahead of itself. The current pattern is systems dropping down from the north, whereas ARs usually come in from the west….something to watch though.
I’m at around 1600’ in Palo Verde and have 9” of snow on my porch. I can see down to 1000’ and there is snow all the way down to that level. It is currently snowing now.
I’m at 1300 west of Briceland. We have about 5″ and a hint of blue sky. Just heard a tree come down.
Today
I wonder if your in Trinity?
That’s exactly what I saw this morning, a touch of blue sky before the snow returning.
I’m at ‘4000, I think were close to 14-16 inches dropped since yesterday. Love it.
🕯🕯Roads are slushy in Fortuna but alot of littlebitty ☃️ seem to cropping up like yard nomes (hope I spelt that right).
A gnome is a diminutive spirit in Renaissance magic and alchemy, first introduced by Paracelsus in the 16th century and later adopted by more recent authors including those of modern fantasy literature. But no sweat Willie; appreciate your comments. Thanks.
gnomes. If you want a spell check hack open a new window in your browser, and search for the word you are checking. Usually it will come up with the spelling unless you are really far afield. Spell coffee as kauphy and you won’t have any luck. I use this hack all the time when making my facebook posts. Thanks for the report.
Solid ice on my street in Blue Lake.
Snow at least an inch deep on M st last night and people still driving over the limit like it was Bluebird weather. Idiots.
Kym, Caltrans says 101 is open with one-way controlled traffic at Leggett etc. The issue is a rock slide. I hope you can get a report on the Alderpoint road before I try it around noon. These weather emergencies really show the value of your work for us locals. Can’t get this info in any other one place. Thanks.
Carry chains and stay safe.
Ed, Caltrans District 1 is not good about updating Quickmap on Weekends or nights. That is inaccurate. Here is their Facebook post showing 101 is closed. https://www.facebook.com/CaltransD1/photos/a.630444600330154/2465257920182137/?type=3&theater

ED, your radio show might have to wait. I’m trying to get a report through a couple different sources. I’ll post here if I hear anything.
Redway
I love this one! A little ironic with that Shelter Cove sign. Perfect for sharing with out-of-area friends.
Redway again
Still snowing in Garberville sure is beautiful.
Ya 9:40 in whitethorne got some sun poking through then snow again, prob 2-3″ on ground. Dogs are loving it!
Beyond beautiful and magical, the trees and hillsides are amazing in snow! Heard tree limbs breaking that sounded like ice shattering as they broke off the madrones. Its gonna be a mess!
Good reminder to be stocked up at home on supplies!
Go out and play in the snow!!! Its so fun.
Dont drive unless you have to&super big thanks to all the folks out there helping on the roads, chp and county roads etc
If youre going to town from the coast youre gonna havta take old briceland and its in BAD shape, be very careful.
We need an alt route

Any update on Alderpoint and Bell Springs Rds.?
If you have any business being out there, you already know.
If you’re thinking of them as highway detours… don’t.
Im just wanting to see if I can leave.
Nothing listed but I would assume that they are snowy based on the info on other nearby roads. Lower Sawmill near Garberville has snow.
Hey Kim, it sure would be nice to include the roads in MendoLand…snowflakes do not observe county lines…2 feet snow on upper Spyrock…remember the 2 highest passes on hwy 101 are in MendoLand (Ridgewood Summit & Rattlesnake Summit)
I would gladly include it if I could BUT I have an open communication with the SoHum Public Works maintenance foreman, Denton Carrick that helps me get info in that area. I don’t know anyone in Mendocino maintenance. Sometimes my info comes from personal connections. And my info elsewhere is spotty. If someone knows the northern Mendocino foreman, please put him in touch with me and reassure him that it can be super helpful to have the media reporting on what roads are open or closed. My email is [email protected]
Dentons the best!!! Many thanks to him for being out there and being so communicative, when a culvert plugged on our county road he gave us his cel to call in case it became urgent. True community member, lucky to have him.
I agree!
7″ on the valley floor in Hyampom. Likely more on the road(s) out. Stay home.
Dear Kym,
Thanks for summing up all the info and folks posting pix.
Lakeport (Lake Co.) had rain all day Sat that turned to sleet and very light snow in the wee hours. Sunny this morning with icy roads in the shade.
Hey,
did anybody notice an increase in “pg&e” trucks around, more than usual, before these storms?
Good coverage.
What is the Status of bull Creek road and the wild cat. I’m trying to get out to Honeydew to take my Husband a generator part.
Only a couple here……feet
Pic
101 at Leggett is a parking lot
Whitethorn
Any idea when it will reopen?
