A shark bite was reported around 5:15 p.m. today at Big River Beach, the large stretch of sand just south of the town of Mendocino.

According to early reports from emergency communications, the victim made it out of the water and was located at the extreme north end of the beach. Emergency personnel responding to the scene requested an ATV to reach the individual more quickly across the sand.

Scanner traffic indicated the injuries, while serious, did not involve arterial bleeding. A paramedic on scene advised that a helicopter response may not be necessary, though REACH 18 was already in the air.

Personnel from California State Parks and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife were also en route to assist.

Details about how the encounter occurred and the condition of the victim have not yet been released.

This is a developing situation, and information is based on early reports which may change as more details become available.

Orcas will attack a great white…. Paint the bottom of your boat to look like an orca and hope the great white considering attacking your boat… is afraid of orcas!

Kris, I don’t think writing that on the bottom of your kayak will help. My is all white which I hope does not make it look like a seal like the black ones do. If the shark is big enough, they can flip your kayak over leaving you exposed as something good to eat. I am thinking about just giving up on using my kayak and just enjoying the beach itself. Stay safe friend.

Carry a gun, like they do in brown bear country. Look for something in stainless.

Carrying a gun if legal is fine. But sharks generally attack very fast giving you very little time to get a kill shot off. If you miss you will have to change you handle to Inside Looking Out.

Hmm… ‘Mac the Knife’ lyrics just came up in my head.

Oh, the shark, babe, has such teeth, dear
And it shows them pearly white
Just a jackknife has old MacHeath, babe
And he keeps it out of sight.

You know when that shark bites with his teeth, babe
Scarlet billows start to spread
Fancy gloves, though, wears old Macheath, babe
So there’s never, never a trace of red

Now on the sidewalk, huh-huh, huh
Ooh, Sunday mornin’, uh-huh
Lies a body just oozin’ life, eek!
And someone’s sneakin’ ’round the corner
Could that someone be Mack the Knife?

A-there’s a tugboat, huh, huh, ah-ah
Down by the river, don’t you know?
Where a cement bag’s just a-droopin’ on down
Oh, that cement is just, it’s there for the weight, dear

Five’ll get you ten, old Mack, he’s back in town
Now did ya hear ’bout Louie Miller?
He disappeared, babe
After drawin’ out all his hard-earned cash
And now MacHeath spends just like a sailor
Could it be our boy’s done somethin’ rash?

Now, Jenny Diver, ho, ho, yeah, Suky Tawdry
Ooh, Miss Lotte Lenya, and Lucy Brown
Oh, the line forms on the right, babe

Now that Mack, he’s back in town
