[UPDATE 9 p.m.: Photo of the Truck on Fire] Semi Truck Fully Involved in Flames at Stafford; 101 Blocked

Vehicle Fire feature iconMultiple callers reported that a semi truck is on fire just north of the 676 exit off Hwy 101 about 2:44 p.m.

The Incident Commander reports that a “car hauler” is fully engulfed in flames.

Multiple fire departments including Scotia and Rio Dell have been asked to respond.

Traffic is stopped in both directions.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

UPDATE 2:56 p.m.: The fire has spread into the nearby vegetation. However, the Incident Commander says the resources already on order can handle the situation.

UPDATE 3:03 p.m.: According to the Incident Commander (IC), the fire has been “knocked down.”

UPDATE 3:11 p.m.: About a 20’x30′ spot of vegetation burned, the IC told the dispatcher.

UPDATE 3:47 p.m.: 101 is opening up and traffic is starting to move more smoothly. The fire is completely extinguished.

Hey, Kymie, this might be one for the Pedantic and Picayune File. Seems to me me that “engulfed” and “fully involved” are synonymous or close to it.

Don’t think that rig is going to hauling anymore vehicles. Sure hope the driver is ok. If there were cars on the truck, my guess would be Tesla’s! A big thank you to the Scotia and Rio Dell Fire Departments along with what looks like Cal Fire people working the field.

I’m pretty sure it was from a tire blow out ! Because I was passing a semi as out a mile before and had to swerve out of the way because a giant tire was in the fast lane!!

How would that burn the truck up? I’m no mechanic. I could see a blown tire pulling the rig out of lane, but why would the truck burn up? Diesel leak? Sparks from a bare wheel?
