A press conference has been called today at 2 p.m. for reporters in Humboldt County. The Department of Health and Human Services stated in the email calling the press conference, “[The] Humboldt County Health Officer will announce an order directing people to shelter at their place of residence starting at midnight tonight, Friday Thursday, March 20.” To clarify, this means tonight!

Only media are allowed at the press conference and only one representative from each media outlet.

However, the email said, “The news conference will be live-streamed for the public via Access Humboldt’s television Channel 10 and its YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/accesshumboldt/videos.”

There are plenty of reasons why.

One reason why is the federal tax deadline was just extended 3 months to July 15th.

The Chinese people of Hubei province were not even allowed to leave their homes and it took 2 months to control the outbreak.

We are behind that curve.

Honest to God, if one more Person acts like this is no big deal – like the dumb fucks that actually went on Spring Break to Florida and complained the bars were closed and how it was affecting their ability to party and be stupid.

The stupid, the foolish – the young. Thinking they are invincible will be the catalyst for the disaster in the United States. Mark my words. HELL MARK THE WORDS OF ITALY!

Their young people acted the same way and look at what happened to their community. Decimated! This is not propaganda people. This is what you young and foolish and ignorant millennials like to poke fun at. You post ignorant things about “Boomers”. You anit-vaxers, and ostriches with heads in the sand thinking “I can’t see it, it can’t see me”. I won’t be sad for you while you wither away in the ICU. IF YOU CAN EVEN GET A BED. And I will be happy to say – “you brought it on yourself”.

I’ve been scoffed at. Laughed at to my face by my boss. People just won’t listen! Even when we have Italy telling us to stop everything and self isolate. We are going to see deaths in the billions from this! It’s horrific! And could of been prevented! That’s the most aggravating thing! We were told, warned given advance warning with photos and documents. But, no, “we will be fine “. Fools ??

Unfortunately we have a fair amount of FOX viewers in our Emerald Triangle.

Undoubtedly their lax attitude regarding the virus will not help our community.

Sooner we attack this than the less time we will have to deal with it. The longer it persists -the longer and harder the measures will be to counter it.

I was the only person in Weaverville yesterday wearing latex gloves at Post Office, gas station and grocery store.

Though I was happy to see the Holiday employees were all gloved up too.

Most of Trinitys permanent residents are at risk.

The wave of death may be undeniable for all, even in our communities, in a few weeks.

Death in the billions lol. You realize covid-19 has only infected 220,000 people and killed 9500 in the entire world right? You do realize that the influenza type A virus going around, which happens to be h1n1, has infected 36 million people, hospitalized 376,000 people and is responsible for 22,000 deaths in the United States alone? The fear is because of the fact that we don’t know much about this coronavirus. It actually has a very low fatality rate compared to a lot of coronaviruses. Did you know that the majority of people who die in the U.S. from viral pneumonia, is caused by coronaviruses? This is nothing new…

Esme

COVID-19 has over 10x the death rate of the flu and will infect about 80% of the population within a couple of months if nothing is done to stop it. With a death rate of 2-4% of the population that means about 4 million Americans dead. 4 million Americans dead. 4 million Americans dead. And within a very short time. Many more whose health is permanently injured by the infection, many more without a parent, spouse, doctor, loved one, child, bread-winner.

Despise me if you want, but take this virus seriously.

Actually it’s totally new. That’s why it’s called a novel virus. Novel definition is “of a new kind; different from anything seen or known before”.

And 95% to 98% of pneumonia cases are not a coronavirus.

“The most commonly isolated viruses in childhood pneumonia requiring hospitalization are respiratory syncytial virus (RSV, 28%), rhinovirus (27%), human metapneumovirus (HMPV, 13%), adenovirus (11%), influenza viruses (7%), parainfluenza (7%), and coronavirus (5%). In adult CAP, viruses are isolated at a lower rate of 10-29%, and the most common viruses among adults requiring hospitalization are rhinovirus (9%), influenza viruses (6%), human metapneumovirus (4%), RSV (3%), parainfluenza (2%), and coronavirus (2%). ”

But none of that has anything to do with covid. It’s a brand new virus we’ve never seen before, and have no immunological defenses for it.

But keep on pushing the Republican talking points. It’s a sure fire way to let thing get totally out of control. And to the person who said that this isn’t a political fight and Bernie supporters are just as dumb as Trump I’d like to point out a major difference. Whether there are Bernie people stupid enough to pretend everything is fine I don’t know, though I doubt it. But there would be a major difference if there was and that is the simple fact that Bernie himself is not stupid and would have done the right thing from the beginning whereas Trump still has his head far up his butt.

And yes this whole affair needs to be politicized or we are going to end up with a continuation of this stupidity and madness we see in Trump and Pence and McConnell and the rest of the hairbrain twits leading us into destruction.

This is just like the anti Tump blithering about how the tax cut meant smaller refunds. It was simply hard for them to grasp that smaller tax bills and a lower withholding meant that more money was left in people’s hands throughout the year as the government took less so of course therefore smaller refunds. It just did not mean what the ATs thought it meant.

Schiff and company are not a credible source. They’ve been playing politics all along and that should be obvious to anyone with a functioning brain. You might want to consider what happened to the DOJ’s case against Concord et al. for “election interference.” You know, the one that was supposed to be the “smoking gun.” Dismissed with prejudice!

Gotta hand it to you, you got on it in the wee hours! Were you monitoring Trump tweets or something?

The case that those 80,000 posts, a large portion of which were non-political, and which continued after the election, were part of a Russian government sponsored election influence operation, is what just got dismissed with prejudice. With prejudice means that the case can’t be re-filed after fine tuning. It’s done.

80,000 posts by a cheesy click-bait marketing operation, representing one in 413 million posts during the same period, isn’t much of an “influence operation.” Your blithering about such factual references being “ridiculous” and “absurd” is mere posturing. You have no credible argument.

There is every indication that the political ads, which included some anti-Trump as well as pro-Trump content, were a hook to draw people towards commercial content.

Steve Parr

According to the whole world, this version of the corona virus has a much lower mortality rate than previous ones we were told were going to kill us all.

Most people exposed show no symptoms.

Others show mild symptoms.

A very small percentage develop symptoms severe enough to be seen by a doctor.

A few of them die.

The mortality rate is lower than MERS, or SARS, and way lower than something which is already here, has been here for years, and kills around 20,000 people every year in the US , which is MRSA.

If we didn’t react this hysterically to any of them, why should we react this hysterically to this?

The, “whole world,” is not saying this is necessary, nor are, “all the doctors in the world.”

Take deep breaths. Stay calm. Open your eyes. Use your reason.

It’s not here. It was, and it went away. If it is still here, running around in secret, it is not making people ill, on any large scale.

Where it has been, it has not proven to be any worse, and actually a lot less worse, than previous versions.

We have more to worry about from MRSA, than from this.

Do Not be extrapolating into irrationality. You think this is the first pandemic the world has ever been through? The mortality rate for the Spanish Flu was about 20% of those who caught it. You better just hope that covid-19 doesn’t really morph into something worse than the overestimation you are making it out to be now. So far covid-19 is less than half of that in the worst distortions you’ve come up with and in most places its much less than that. Now that is worth getting hysterical about.

Covid appears to have an overall 4% fatality rate, but the older you are, the higher it is, but…. the real danger is the hospital system. Lets say you get in a car wreck while they are overrun with people dying and crying in the halls. You haven’t got a flu, but you are going to be in the hall too. Or your dad has a heart attack. What going to happen to him?
whether you are 20 and in great health or 90 and hoping to stay another year, this thing is a big deal.

the first responders and the hospital staff do not need to be overrun. they deserve a calm, steady workflow that they can manage. As my friend said, “wait, all I got to do to save the world is stay home and do nothing? oh,, count me in.”

“At present, it is tempting to estimate the case fatality rate by dividing the number of known deaths by the number of confirmed cases. The resulting number, however, does not represent the true case fatality rate and might be off by orders of magnitude […]

“A precise estimate of the case fatality rate is therefore impossible at present.”

2019-Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV): estimating the case fatality rate – a word of caution – Battegay Manue et al., Swiss Med Wkly, February 7, 2020

https://smw.ch/article/doi/smw.2020.20203

The statistical extrapolation of data is only going to yield accurate results if the initial input of data is accurate. Without a much higher testing rate and more time any data at this point is guess work.

First personally I tick off every box in the “Are you at risk” trope. I am among those most likely to die of this disease. So I have taken myself out of the milieu as much as possible already despite the assumption that was in that comment that somehow I expect to be invulnerable just because I disagree with TBR’s misunderstood stats and panic mongering which creates unbalanced behavior. Not calm at all. It creates hoarding, overreaction and other irrational behavior. Self isolation is actually harmed by it.

Second I think it is a civic duty to act as if I could get very sick for the exact reason that it helps spread out the infections so that others can get help if they need it and I can do it. So I do. It’s good for me and the nation if I do so.

Third these isolation orders are like hitting a pause button, not a reset, and certainly are not going to keep most people from being infected sooner or later. This will be long and continuing haul until a successful vaccine is developed which will likely have a few twists along the way. Panic prevents intelligent action and causes more damage that would happen with rational decisions were made.

And last, the mortality rate varies due to the populations, quality of public health and citizen commitment. Italy is extreme on the high end of fatality levels because it is older and that generation smokes more, along with being burdened by constant political turmoil in government. South Korea (and China too for that matter) is on the low end because it is younger. South Korea has not yet made mass, country wide shut downs of their economy because it has very specifically targeted outbreaks and reassured its populace of the ability to control the outbreak without such draconian disruptions. But over all the demographics of the world is much like the US- a bit higher than South Korea but a lot less than Italy. So the rate of mortality in the end will be closer to South Korea than Italy and no where near TRB’s and less than 4% too.
https://asiatimes.com/2020/03/why-are-koreas-covid-19-death-rates-so-low/

And that reality should weigh with the US’s policies. Not self damaging hysteria causing the Phyrric victory that political agenda wants to dictate. Yes, the lack of testing is a failure here but it is not so critical that we are totally blind. We know where people are getting sick and can use that to have a good idea of what the future holds. But only if we keep our heads and not panic.

I suppose it’s too late for rational thinking but that doesn’t mean I have to approve of the irrational.

We are already waaaaaaaay behind S. Korea numbers.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

We have twice the deaths already, untold numbers of undiagnosed cases, twice the amount of diagnosed cases.

S. Korea has begun to flatten their curve.

We are just beginning our curve.

7:00 am and theres already 500 deaths today. Italy hasn’t reported, but will add another 500 give or take. US is adding all day.

You’ll see.

Just like 8 days ago, when I was using S. Korea as an example of doing thi is right- you fought me on it.

Now your using it.

And more recently I’ve been telling you that Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong are even better examples of what went right – you’re fighting me on it.

I was off by two days in predicting Italys rise from 350 a day to 450 deaths a day.

I was using a formula, and it had been based on a 7 day average or diagnosis to death.

The average had turned to 8 without my knowledge.

Now Italy has averaged 450 deaths per day, for 2 days in a row.

Where the hell is my gross over extrapolation?

It’s math. And its holding up so far.

Now, I said in the comment your bashing that conservatively 8,000 more people will die in 8 more days.

More realistically, more than 8,000 people will die in 8 days.

Again, 8 days ago the daily death toll was 336.

It has tripled in 8 days.

If you don’t understand, or agree, that’s ok. I can operate normally with your skepticism and insult.

The broad range extrapolation is what it is.

A worst case extrapolation says we may be seeing a rise of deaths by 24,000 in 8 days.

I don’t know if it will be that, I sure hope not.

But it won’t be less than what it was today, 1,000 per day, bringing another 8,000 souls to their end.

And that’s pretty bad.

And it isn’t a liberal agenda.

Perhaps I’m not the only one doing the math, and perhaps that is why there is such a strong international response.

In 8 days, you can call me out or STFU.

I doubt you will acknowledge any accuracy.

You don’t do that.

You just demand an end to bashing Team Trump and FOX.

And you ignore all the times you have gotten it wrong.

I demand understanding of arithmetic and statistics. But I predict that will not be increased because I demand it. I know it’s not all about me. I just wish you would stop making it all about you. You predict nothing that any other sensible person could not see yet think that makes your other ideas invincible.

Trump did not cause this situation. The worse that can be said is that he did not see what almost no one else saw as important nor understand the feeding frenzy that would result from fear. That is a defect of a non politician in office; underestimating the mob. I wish that I did not have to defend Trump because he is not really very defensible. But his haters are so irrational that a person could spend their entire life responding to it. Futilely too because intelligence is not a learned attribute. My saying you are wrong is not the same as saying Trump is perfect- a point you can not grasp either.

No, you dont say Trump is perfect.

You just can’t stand criticism of him.

You’ve put yourself out on a limb by saying “he’s not perfect” and has “his faults”.

Italy announced a 627 deaths in the last 24 hours.

Right on track for about 900 a day in 5 more days give or take.

World daily deaths is 1,200 so far today.

I’m not irrational to criticize Trump, no, but you think it’s more irrational to criticize Trump than to spread outright bullshit about Democrats, or right wing cobspiracy, paranoia and ignorance.

Your not objective, and your very often wrong.

You think I think “it’s about me” when all I’m demanding through my commenting is accuracy, or the best attempt of it.

Currently under shelter in place in SF. There are exemptions for essential workers to work, etc. This includes food workers including farmers and a whole list of others. Unless under quarantine everyone is allowed outside to take care of others, walk, go for food, medicine, etc. It will be outlined in the order. Enjoy what there is to enjoy. Read, sing, dance, work from.home. It’s so the healthcare system isn’t overwhelmed when ithe virus really takes off.

After two weeks pass and then let us outside again, the virus will still be around and it will spread. They need 2 weeks to get more supplies because there will be that many people sick. Yes it’s a flu. But no flu has spread this far and fast. No h1n1 did not kill over 100 Americans in less the 2 months.

Many people born before 1958 had immunity to H1N1. I remember having “Hong Kong flu” and being really sick and feverish during my eighth grade year in 1958 (now you know how old I am). In 2009 when H1N1 hit here, it was the same virus come around again 50 years later. The three younger folks I shared an office with were all sick as dogs, esp. the one I worked most closely with, and I never had even the sniffles. But NO ONE has natural immunity to coronavirus because it is brand-new!

Janet

Not the flu. This is new/novel virus mutated from animals to which humans have no natural immunity. The elderly are hardest hit with deadly and sudden pneumonia. We are complying to slow down the rate of infection to avoid infection and also to give our health care system time to catch up and not be overwhelmed. Check out history less from Spanish flu, the difference between St. Louis and Philadelphia in how they reacted and what happened.

Elon Musk just came out with the first microchip you can implant in your brain to make phone calls and access the internet. There is a bill quietly tiptoeing called the EARN IT Act that would allow Law Enforcment a backdoor into encrypted programs on the internet. Basically the end of “end-to-end” encryption. It does away with Section 230 which allows service providers on the internet to provide a platform for their users to use without the company being held responsible for their users actions. If it passes it will allow law enforcement to view all encrypted services, be it what you’ve stored in the iCloud, what’s in your online bank statements, PayPal, Venmo, access information stored on your Alexa and your RING security system. Basically the 2nd half of the Patriot Act. As the Obama administration so famously said, “Never waste a good crisis.”

Many businesses are not following basic reccomendations, and many of the public aren’t either. If folks are too stupid to simply not breathe on each other, or not touch each other then often times these measures are implemented.
Take rio dell/scotia. Mingos was door open with a packed bar patrons bumping elbows, Shotz decided they were going to put their tables and seating back in, Roots 101 has decided they believe they are an essential buisness and as such dont have to obey any Reccomendations or orders. These decisions are made with money in mind and without any science or education behind them… it’s just business as usual…
article today said speakeasy was open in Eka.. it was the bartenders choice…so when people dont listen, more extreme measures are often times implemented.
You have to ask yourself, how many non believers are out there? Many… how many non believers are taking basic precautions? Not many. How many of us believers or non believers can even get tested? Not many.. do the math. People are selfish, some are ignorant, many are both…
Thank you to those who are listening and doing their best to do their civic duty to others around them. Minimize your trips out, stop unnecessary cross contamination, and try to help reduce exposure. Everyone else is an asshole.

This does not just effect older people. Here’s the NYT, you can also find these same statistics elsewhere. Younger people need to know this or there will be more deaths and intensive care patients who are young. If a person is sick enough to be in intensive care, they don’t always recover 100%.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/18/health/coronavirus-young-people.html

“New C.D.C. data shows that nearly 40 percent of patients sick enough to be hospitalized were age 20 to 54. But the risk of dying was significantly higher in older people.

[…]

The report, issued Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found that — as in other countries — the oldest patients had the greatest likelihood of dying and of being hospitalized. But of the 508 patients known to have been hospitalized, 38 percent were notably younger — between 20 and 54. And nearly half of the 121 patients who were admitted to intensive care units were adults under 65, the C.D.C. reported.”

I think some of the rates are because of social behavior as well. People in their 20’s and early 30’s have this misinformed idea they are not likely to get severely sick.

Also, Italy has a very touch-y culture. Frequent hugs. Some Asian cultures and Arabic cultures have less social distancing normally than other cultures. It’s ok to be touching strangers in a crowd or breathing on acquaintances. Finland is the other extreme where people can be 5 – 10 ft away from each other naturally at bus stops etc. A lot of subcultures in the US have a natural social distance of 3 to 4 ft.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

The average death after diagnosis is 8 days now.

Today, the world hit 1000 deaths in one day, and it might end the day at 1,100 or more.

Conservatively, in 8 days 8000 more people will die.

Bringing the total deaths to 18,000 give or take.

Realistically, if you go to the death count of 8 days ago you’ll see it was 336 in a day.

The daily death count has tripled in 8 days.

8 days ago the new case count per day was 7,375.

We are (today) at 26,000 new cases a day.

The daily new case count has more than tripled.

In 8 days, we will have more than another 8,000 victims of this virus.

I hope you all realize those numbers are total bs. They’ve hardly tested anybody. The dumb headlines oh now 50 states have it. Hello if it spreads sooo easy with international travel as common as it is it’s BEEN here! I’m sure waaaay more people have it then they say so comparing the deaths to the limited amount of people they test gives a false percentage. Then using those numbers saying well 2 million Americans will die is a complete lie!!!!

This is going to screw more people over finically than their health but having people poor and hungry is perfectly fine gets no attention!?

A friend who lives in SF had his place of employment, a print shop where he’s worked for 15 years, shuttered by government order and was told that he should go home and shelter in place. For three days he’s been staying home in his studio apartment for which he pays $1000 a month, shops at Safeway early in the morning and now is going to apply for a job at Safeway because they are the only ones hiring. The same at Costco. He sees ignorant people drinking in the bars and shopping with no care that they could be infecting other people. So incredibly selfish. You don’t have to be elderly, immune system compromised or exposed to the virus at an airport or bar to get this thing. One pastor said all he got was a slight cough, but tested positive and so may have infected the hundreds of people he sees in the three churches that he’s associated with. Another person came home from work at 6PM with slight flu like symptoms. By 10PM her fever had spiked, by 3 AM she’s in the ER fighting for her life. She did recover but said it was like her body was fighting itself. You, nor anyone in the county, the neighboring county (one positive so far in Mendo), or anywhere should take this lightly. There is no vaccine. There is no cure. So heed the warnings of our health dept and STAY HOME, except for essentials like food. And if you start feeling ill call your doctor to get advice on what to do.

“A press conference has been called today at 2 p.m. for reporters in Humboldt County. The Department of Health and Human Services stated in the email calling the press conference, “[The] Humboldt County Health Officer will announce an order directing people to shelter at their place of residence starting at midnight tonight, Thursday, (maybe Friday) March 20.”

WOW!!! This should prove interesting. Police stopping people in vehicles? All stores closed. What if you are walking or riding your bike? And what if you ARE stopped while outside. Will the police arrest you? Will you be cited? Will you have to pay a fine? We have no documented cases of infected people in our county.
One case documented in a county to the North and several more in three counties to the South. SF has more than twenty.

Oh Whoa is me!! The sky is falling! There are midgets mining underneath my house.

well, its not for you or for me, its for our hospitals and their staff. They cannot be expected to deal with people crying and dieing in the halls. not to mention the incredible danger of infection they will suffer if the numbers of patients explode beyond capacity.
I can’t add a graph to a comment, but I have a graph. h1n1 killed 12,000 people when it blew through the United States just over 10 years ago. This thing could kill millions.
the h1n1 had killed 4 people in the first 16 days after our first death from it. Covid killed over 90 in the first 16 days. We have to protect ourselves, and our first responders.

Hey, fellow community members, be safe out there. We need you all!

I ran into my first “virus refugee” today. I had to go by the office in Garberville to pick up some files that I needed to work on at home. I then was going home to shelter in place. Well, there was a truck parked by the gate. The people there were unloading their truck and repacking it. They said they had some up from the Bay Area and ran out of road last night. So, they went to our Ray’s Market, but there was a sign saying it was quarantined. So, they slept in our parking lot. Then, they were going to head north from here after using the local laundromat. Can anyone see the problem here? These folks came from the county with the highest infection rate in California and are now going to be passing through one of the counties with a lower infection rate, stopping along the way to use local businesses. THIS IS HOW INFECTION SPREADS! This is why we are supposed to shelter in place and why so many communities are going on lockdown. You cannot outrun a virus. If you are infected, you may not feel sick for two weeks. So, even if you feel fine, if you are coming from an area with a high infection rate to an area of low infection rate, you are a potential carrier of that virus to the new location. Why risk infecting a whole bunch of other people? Just stay home and follow the directions. The idea is to slow or stop the spread of the virus, not to make the situation worse by traveling all over the state! Every business you stop at, every time you get gas, every place you stop for food, you are spreading infection. (If you have it or are not symptomatic.) This is just basic viral epidemiology. We should all be trying to stay at home so that infection rates will remain low. Why get others sick? DO NOT try to outrun the virus. Please stay home and don’t infect others! Listen to what the medical professionals are telling us, please. This is serious stuff! Just pretend that you are infected, or are a carrier, and act accordingly! We will all be safer.

Im sorry but if you did not see this coming you need to pay more attention.
In the last 36 hours Sonoma, Mendo and Lake counties went under this order. Theyre concerned with exposure due to so much travel between our counties and the Bay.

We can treat 25 people in our county. Once we’re overwhelmed our doctors will have to make some horrible choices just like in Italy, theyll have to decide who to treat and who to let die.

In Italy the next step is going to be an age limit at hospitals meaning if you come in sick over a certain age you wont be treated. Look it up. Its basic medical triage, you treat whomever has the best chance of survival.

16 old folks homes in Florida have it now, its just a matter of time here. Specialists say we’re still weeks away from our peak. Our govt is obviously very unprepared for any disaster which has made this entire situation a 1000 times worse so now you have to stay inside or run the risk of killing someone thanks to this administration.

So suck it up, let’s be ooober grateful most of us live somewhere that we can go outside and not see anyone! Mushrooms are popping back up and its a great time to brush off that edible plants book and find out what wild foods grow in your “backyard”.

San Francisco SIP orders:

Here’s a list of what residents can and can’t do under the “shelter in place” order.

Not OK to do:
Dinner parties: You cannot invite friends over to your home to hang out.

Go to a barber, stylist, or nail salon: Haircuts and manicures aren’t considered essential under the order.

Go to a church, synagogue, or mosque: Going to a house of worship can endanger others; instead, the city suggests remote religious services by “emails, video streaming, or teleconference.”

Go on vacation: You are not allowed to leave your home county unless it is for an exempted, “essential” purpose. If you leave for a vacation you will not be allowed to return to your residence for the duration of the order.

Go to the gym: Gyms and health clubs will be closed.

Swimming in a public or communal pool: No indoor sports or team sports are allowed, including swimming in a “communal” pool.

Have my child’s nanny come over: Only if the nanny lives in your home or provides medical care to a child. The only other exception is for parents who must work away from home because they provide an “essential” service.

Go out to eat: Restaurants are allowed to remain open, but only for carry-out and drive-thru; bars and dine-in operations must close.

OK to do:
Take a stroll in the park or a walk my dog: You may “go for walks, go to the park, and engage in other similar activities,” but you must keep a distance of 6 feet from anyone who is not an immediate member of your household.

Go to an ice-cream shop: As long as you’re getting your cone to go (and the ice-cream shop is open), ice cream trips are apparently OK.

Get money out of the bank: This is allowed, but the city advises that you should minimize unnecessary trips.

Swim in the ocean: If you can brave the icy waters and the swift currents of the Pacific, you’re clear to go for an ocean dip. You’re also allowed to swim in your personal pool or hot tub, if you’re lucky enough to have one.

Play basketball by yourself: Shooting hoops solo is OK, but games like Horse, which involve other players, are not OK. Also permitted: hitting a tennis ball against a backboard.

Get food and essential supplies: “Grocery stores, farmers markets, food banks, convenience stores, take-out and delivery restaurants” as well as gas stations, banks, laundromats, hardware stores, and plumbers will all remain open.

Receive mail and online deliveries: The post office will be open, while package and food-delivery services to your home can continue to function.

Use ride-hailing or ride-share services, taxis, and public transportation (for essential travel): Travel is allowed only for one of the “essential” purposes mentioned in the order; that means a trip to the grocery store is OK, but not a trip to your friend’s house or favorite park.

What if I don’t comply? “This is a legally enforceable order issued under California law. It is a crime to violate this Order, and you may be punished by a fine or imprisonment for doing so.”

More helpful info you can look up:

The worst-case-scenario numbers, coming from China, and Italy, show a mortality rate lower than this virus’ cousins, MERS, and SARS.

As more numbers come in, as more people are tested, and the numbers of infected people grows dramatically, it would be wise to pay attention to the relative death rate.

If the number of people who are found to be infected grows exponentially, but the number of deaths do not, it shows that we have another seasonal bug going around, no better, and no worse, than the ones we’re already used to.

Please, please, try to keep things in perspective. Sure, people are going to die. There are 7+ billion people in the world. A huge number die every day. Life is not permanent, and to waste time worrying about something which is statistically inconsequential, is to throw away what little time we have been given on this Earth.

Live life. Move on. Be free. Don’t let the media take away your happiness, and your ability to think for yourself.
