Southern Humboldt Unified School District Cancels Classes
Press release from Ssouthern Humboldt Unified School District:
Dear Southern Humboldt Families,
In response to the growing concerns and careful deliberation of many factors regarding the COVID-19 situation, it is with great consideration for our communities emotional and physical health and wellbeing that the District has made the decision to close all schools in the Southern Humboldt Unified School District starting Monday March 16 through Friday March 27, 2020. All additional school and extra-curricular activities including all athletics will postponed until further notice.
It is well known that our schools are the heart of our community and we want to be diligent and proactive in regards to the wellbeing and safety of our students, staff and community as a whole.
Updates will continue to be sent out as decisions are made and as soon as possible, communications outlining some of our plans for services will be sent out.
This is constantly evolving situation and we will continue to diligently monitor updates and we will make all attempts to keep you informed and updated as the situation develops and decisions are made.
Should the need to extend the District closure present itself, that scenario will be carefully considered and notifications sent out immediately.
We will be re-evaluating weekly, continually planning, and families can expect updates from the District each Friday.
Thank you for your continued trust and support.
Don Boyd, Superintendent

That’s Great! We are at war with this virus, the next 3/4 weeks are critical. The virus is going to come here, if it’s not here now. We just don’t need everyone to come down with it at once. Wash them hands and stay out of crowds. With knowledge,Love ,and compassion we will come through this a stronger community.

Good job Don Boyd and school board. I support erring on the side of caution when the stakes are as high as the health of our community.
Mckinlyvillie school district just called and canceled as well
If the government is shutting down, do I still have to pay taxes? No service, no bill right?
Because the school closes does not mean to take your children to public places. Best to stay home. Lots of children entertaint ideas on the web.
Liz = plenty to do with your kids indoors at home or on your property without using Electricity or the Web!! I mean, I raised a few kids and step kids without either at times. Definiitely without the web before the 1980’s – ’90’s!! Sometimes we did not even have a landline telephone. Imagine that.
I was raised without a phone, internet, computer, electricity or toilet. I wouldn’t change that for anything material. Thanks mom n pops. Fish, hunt, shoot and learn to start a cooking/warming fire. Those were the activities I did, but hey, reality is dirty, cold and mean.
Finally does the right thing to protect our children and community.

What about the single parents who still have to go to work? I work in healthcare, am I to quarantine myself as well??? Keeping the kids home is not the brightest idea , and for 2 weeks? You really think two weeks is going to do anything about the virus spread? Since we are forced keeping our kids home from school are you teaching your children to practice proper hygiene as well? Are you keeping them isolated from their friends and the public as well? If I see you out with your kids I’m calling you out..good job unemployed coalition of sohum mom’s..
Envious?
Is the “unemployed coalition of sohum moms” to blame for your lack of child care?
Unemployed so hum moms drive BMWs and Audi’s. Got to get to those nail appointments somehow?!
So what if they do?
When did it become a bad thing for a mother to spend time raising her children?
Not anything wrong for them to stay home and raise their children, hope they’re teaching them how to protect themselves and others against illness.. unfortunately some of us do not have the option to stay home, I have to work to support my child and myself. I can’t just choose to stay home when school is out, and I can’t just find someone to care for my kid either. Regardless, school is out. Good luck everyone.
Hmm.. Lack of child care… Yes who is to watch the children when they fear the children are the “virus spreaders”.. ? Not envious, just irritated. Am I not entitled to my freedom of speech as you are? Sure I shouldn’t have targeted, are they not the ones who made the fuss to close the schools? My real concern is what is actually going to be done to protect the community during & after the 2 weeks of closure?
But bear river casino is still open!
Good luck everyone. Yea, the casino is open, school’s out and 4H is still having a bake-sale. Whatever.. it is what it is.
The state 4-H org, UCANR sent out a message this morning cancelling all 4-H club meetings and activities.
I got a text around 12:30pm saying there would be no meetings but that they’re still having bake sale tomorrow at true value, and accepting donated baked goods.. glad if they’re shutting it down all things considered.
