The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce our new Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services Manager Ryan Derby.

Derby began his new role on Monday, December 9, 2019. He joins the Sheriff’s Office from the Humboldt County DHHS Public Health branch where he was the program coordinator assigned to prepare the county for health-related emergencies. Derby has also served on the National Guard’s Quick Reaction Force, a unit assigned to respond to domestic incidents such as fires, floods, and other disasters.

“This experience gave me the opportunity to see emergency services work from the field level and has helped me understand some of the downstream effects of my procedural and planning considerations in my county role,” Derby said.

Derby is a recent graduate of the National Emergency Management Advanced Academy. There he learned tools, concepts and theories about the future of emergency management and how to run an effective emergency management program.

From his experience, Derby brings new perspective to the Office of Emergency Services and ambitious goals for the future.

“I strongly believe in a whole community approach to emergency management and recognize that we cannot be successful in this work without understanding our local hazards and limitations, educating our residents, building partnerships and training our staff,” Derby said. “My goals for OES are to establish a highly trained, motivated and competent team of EOC staff and community partners who are ready and willing to respond to any threat that comes to Humboldt County. When it comes to an emergency, we’re all in this together.”

Someone should be sure to remind Ryan to sign up for the HCSO Dead Man’s Property Lotto. He could win a 1977 Corvette.
