Mazda With Two Foreign Nationals Crashes Into Armored Truck; Two Dead

Fatal crash Feature iconPress release from the California Highway Patrol:

On 09-18-2019, at approximately 1145 AM, the Humboldt Area CHP was notified of a two vehicle collision on SR-299, just west of the Willow Creek area. Emergency personnel responded to the scene and located a westbound 2010 Chevrolet armored truck had collided with an eastbound Mazda Sedan, causing fatal injuries to the driver and passenger of the Mazda. The armored truck driver, 35 year old Bradley Huss of Redding, received minor injuries as a result of this collision. Both the driver and the passenger of the Mazda are foreign nationals and their identifications are being withheld pending notification of next of kin by the Humboldt County Coroner’s office.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the Mazda, traveling eastbound on SR-299 at an unsafe speed for the wet roadway conditions, lost control and traveled into the westbound lane where it was struck by the armored truck.

Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in this collision.

The CHP Humboldt Area Office is continuing to investigate this collision and asks anyone who may have information to contact the Humboldt Area CHP Office at 707-822-5981 or send an email to [email protected].

Sounds reasonable that since they were Foreign Nationals, they would not know how to drive on roads in Humboldt County or other places. A hard lesson to learn, but, that won’t do them any good anymore. Sad, but, this is a heads up for everybody else, wet roads in the mountains, especially after a long dry spell means trouble or death for those that do not pay attention to the conditions. For these two souls, it’s a little too late. RIP

Well…… at least the Darwin Award contestant chose an appropriate vehicle to plow into.

Glad the armored truck driver was not injured. If it had been any other type of vehicle, the results would have been far worse.

Driving around in other peoples country requires the tourist visa overstayers to understand the nuances of our local road culture, and seasonal issues affecting safety.
All this seems obvious, and maybe the foreign nationals were legal and registered, but I somehow suspect not.
Another reason to armor up and get a after market bumper on your Prius

Anyone else find it odd that there was only one person in the armored truck? I thought they always had two people on board.

I think they’d be listed as a passenger if that were the case. Could be something simple like they had no cargo at the time.

Poorly written. The first mention of the armored vehicle says it collided with the Mazda, when it’s clear in a later sentence that the Mazda was at fault and collided with the armored vehicle, which was in its own lane.
