It’s what we do. We care for one another. We are a human tribe. There is no expense to consider greater than the love we feel for our fellow in need…whether lost in the woods or in the street.
I strive to be like these humble people, sacrificing time and comforts to find another. They know it could easily be them.
I do.
And I thank them all!

Wow, you sound like someone without an ounce of compassion. You are not a nice person.

Really?

It’s true though and has nothing to do with compassion or the lack of it. Certainly did not merit that last remark. It course all the people who know him from his own service would rally round. https://kymkemp.com/2019/08/16/band-of-brothers-and-sisters-local-fire-and-medical-community-gather-to-search-for-missing-hiker/

I feel bad for my earlier comments, saying it was over reacting. Seems to be a serious situation. My condolences. It is a beautiful but wild and unforgiving environment up there in the high country. Hope he is sound safe.

And I feel bad about one of my insensitive comments. I hope everything turns out OK. Praise and thanks to the searchers and I hope this turns out to be a great fireside story in years ahead.

It looks like PJ helicopters is helping as well. I wonder if their LIDAR units will help in this scenario. …

Civil Air Patrol. I’m not sure their role in this… radio relay perhaps. Or just another set of eyes in the sky.

Updated. I’m not sure why so much effort around Silgio Peak. That’s a long ways from where he was last seen and where he seemed intent on going.

If you hike in the wilderness stay with the group. Period. Jack London wrote a great short story about this. “The Wisdom of the Trail.”

He was not with a group. He was hiking alone. The people he met was a chance encounter and they parted ways.

So I’m guessing you never drive right? 30,000+ a year fatal accidents compared to 140 fatal hikes a year. You must loose your mind and tell everyone not to drive when they get in a car right?

Don’t push your fear of life on others because the one in a million chance of it going bad.

The most dangerous situations I had in the Alps were always from weirdos I would run into, that is for anyone who would post about not being prepared or something else just as dumb.

Since this has our minds on the wilds, I will share this. I taught wilderness survival for years. The number one failing that just kept being repeated, so much so it has to be a failing in the modern human psyche, was shelter siteing. People put their shelter near a natural hazard, usually a snag, more times than not, it was crazy. There is a national forest campsite at the top of my road they had to close because of 3 obvious crumbling old growth snags right in the campground, people pushed aside the signs and “Caution” tape and camped there all deer season, for years.

Stay safe everyone and hoping for the best.

That’s not the civil air patrol. (edit: N9538E is CAP, but not the same plane) N743CP it landed an hour ago after being in the air for 4 hours.
https://flightaware.com/live/flight/N743CP

There is at least 2 helicopters up there; CHP and PJ helicopters both headed that way before disappearing from radar. And the National Guard has people in the air.

Oh, that is so, so sad. Condolences to all his many friends, and his family and loved ones. I want to say more, about him dying doing what he loved, etc., but those words just seem hollow right now and I am heartsick. What a sad loss. RIP.

Why are all these people seeking the missing 73 year old man? I really don’t understand this.
