The mp 16 fire is about 3 to 5 acres. Burning in grass, brush and timber. Crews have been on it all night monitoring fire behavior which as of 0400 was minimal. We expect control about 1600. Highway 96 is closed with an alternate route being the Dowd Rd. Rod Mendes, Chief of Fire and OES.

UPDATE 1:41 p.m.: Firefighters have gotten control of the fire and are now in mop up. Hoopa Fire Chief Rod Mendes reports,

The fire is contained and controlled with a hose lay and handline. Personnel are in mop up and we anticipate it be in patrol status by 6 pm.

A sign of the times. The USFS is hosting a pre-fire season gathering while their fire crews are already busy fighting pre-fire season fires. Time to change the start of the fire season. Or through the whole idea out the window.

Time to change the way fires are fought and how the forests are managed.
Even age timber mngmnt is dumb for many reasons.
We have amazing foresters here who understand fire hazard reduction and mixed age mngmnt. We need them to be utilized. USFS manages so poorly, not to mention all the cows grazing all over natl forests.

The road may or may not open today.
If you choose to live here thats the reality, in winter the roads can close for a week.
When you see the what-you-need in your kit for an emergency ad, triple it for your home so you’re prepared for the possibility of road closures with enough stashed in case youre stuck longer.
We shuld all have enuf on hand for a minimum 2 day road closure that leaves you home bound. Self sufficiency works!
