Press release from the California Highway Patrol:

On 06/03/2019 at approximately 1920 hours, a 1994 Nissan Pathfinder driven by Robert Neubert was traveling north on US-101 northbound, just south of MPM 101 MEN 66.46. Lila Chafin was seated in the front passenger seat of the Nissan. For reasons still under investigation, the Nissan traveled off the roadway and down the embankment where it collided with a utility pole. As a result, a telephone line that was attached to the utility pole fell into the roadway. At approximately 1940 hours a 2008 Ford F450 truck driven by Rashad Brackeen was traveling northbound on US 101 and collided with the down telephone line.

Neubert sustained minor injuries and was transported to Howard Memorial Hospital by Laytonville ambulance. Chafin sustained major injuries and was transported to Santa Rosa Medical Center by Reach Air. Brackeen was not injured and drove his vehicle from the scene.

Laytonville Volunteer Fire Department, City Ambulance and Reach Air assisted with medical aid. US 101 was closed at this location for approximately 2 hours during the removal of the telephone line and recovery of the Nissan. Cal-Trans assisted in the road closure.

This incident remains under investigation by the Garberville CHP Office. Neither Alcohol nor drugs appeared to be a factor in this collision.CHP TC report

Again with the accidents around Laytonville that stretch of road between Garberville and Willits has become a very dangerous area I don’t know if the speed is the problem our people are just tired but I really believe the Caltrans needs to do some investigating and maybe Place something around that area to wake people up it’s been way too many accidents in that area hope everyone recovers

This was across the street from my house. And as far as I and the rest of the bystanders were concerned the driver should have been taken in for blood work. There was no way he was not on something and released to leave.
There were many concerning things that transpired throughout this incident. Glad it’s over and everyone made it out alive. We just got power restored and the highway is back open both directions.

I don’t blame the road, it has been there for years. The problem is driver’s that don’t pay attention, driving intoxicated, high on drugs, driving to fast for the road and conditions, etc.

It might not have been the roads “fault,” but the roads here in California, especially here in Humboldt, are pretty notorious, (along with the drivers, of course). But, I think we would all benefit from safer and better roads… plus, it could mean jobs.

Sending my prayers to those who were involved in this terrible accident. I hope you all recover.

Some corrections, I was on the scene like a minute after it happened. Witnesses said there was no warning before the car veered violently off the road. Occurred more like 7:40. There were also two dogs in the crashed car that seemed uninjured. Rashad was immediately behind the car that crashed and the cables bounced off the passenger side of his Ford Superduty truck and smashed the mirror. Also, some current from the lines arced to his car and fried his truck’s electronics, causing it to die and he had to coast to a stop. The collision knocked out power to 37 PGE customers in the Twin Pines Subdivision immediately west of the crash site, power was restored at 11:45 AM today. Phone connection was not interrupted as far as I know. Around 9pm, CHP allowed one lane traffic of shorter vehicles that could pass under the lines, not trucks.

Ppl really need to be careful not to assume they know for sure if someone involved in an accident was ‘on something’ or not .. especially based on behavior. The only way inebriation can be determined is by a legitimate test performed by a professional trained to administrate that particular test. Otherwise it’s just hearsay and you’re potentially insulting someone’s reputation and/or opening yourself up for a lawsuit.

Since Neubert was minorly injured, he’ll likely survive. I would love it if someone can report his answer to the question, “What happened?”
