Two Injured in Crescent City Structure Fire

Structure firePress release from Crescent City Fire and Rescue:

On Thursday, May 09, 2019 at 1:58 AM Crescent City Fire and Rescue was dispatched to a structure fire in the area of Humboldt and Lauff. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire burning in the single-story residential structure at 323 Humboldt. Fire was pushing from all visible windows on the north and south sides of the structure. CALFIRE Crescent City Station responded on the initial dispatch, and Fort Dick Fire and Pelican Bay State Prison Fire Department were requested mutual aid. It was reported early that there were possible burn victims across the street, and an ambulance was requested to the scene code three. Based upon the volume of fire, an exterior “defensive” attack was initiated.

The first arriving engine established a water supply from the hydrant at Cooper and Humboldt and pulled an attack line. Additional attack lines were pulled, and incoming crews continued fire attack from the exterior. A garage on the involved property, as well as structures nearby to the north and west were protected from fire spread. Fire crews were hindered in their attack due to multiple vehicles in front of the structure at the curb and on the lawn, as well as debris and holes in the yard area surrounding the location. A low hanging electrical line on the north side of the fire building also hindered crews until made safe by Pacific Power & Light personnel. The fire was knocked down in just over an hour of arrival on scene, and crews were involved with heavy overhaul of the structure for an additional 2.5 hours to make sure all hot spots were extinguished.

Crescent City Fire & Rescue responded with three engines, one water tender, a rescue unit, and three support vehicles, staffed with 17 volunteer firefighters. CALFIRE responded with three personnel. Fort Dick Fire responded with two engines staffed with a total of five volunteer firefighters; one Fort Dick engine remained available at scene to assist with other incidents had they occurred. Pelican Bay Prison Fire responded with one engine with six personnel. No injuries were sustained by any of the 30 responding firefighters. Due to the heavy damage to the structure, the cause of the fire is undetermined. The fire caused approximately $80,000 in damage to the building, which is a total loss. Two individuals who were inside the structure at the time of the fire were transported to the hospital, with one having minor burns. Unfortunately, one deceased dog was located at the fire structure.
