[UPDATE 8:22 p.m.] Hwy 101 Closed AGAIN!!

Last Chance grade slide

As of 6:26 p.m., the California Highway reports that a new slide at “Last Chance Grade” is blocking the entire roadway again.

At 7:29 p.m., Highway 101 was closed to both northbound and southbound traffic. Vehicles are being turned around. Caltrans has no estimated time when the highway will open again. We will update as we get more information.

UPDATE 8:22 p.m.: According to Senator Mike McGuire, “…Highway 101 is closed at the same site as this morning, between Klamath and Crescent City. A contractor is on site, but the upper hillside remains unstable and the weather isn’t cooperating. The highway will most likely be closed through the night.”

Caltrans knows that eventually they are going to have to abandon that road the blue clay slide areas and the steepness of the coastal geology eventually they’ll have to punch their way Inland a bit
