Pickup Truck Engulfed in Flames on Highway 299
A pickup truck engulfed in flames on Highway 299 at about 6:43 a.m., Saturday, March 8, shut down traffic near mile marker 19.40 just east of Lord Ellis Summit, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). One-way traffic control is now in place.
Reportedly, small explosions were heard while the truck was burning, possibly from ammunition.
Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (HSO) deputies and fire crews arrived on the scene, shutting down both lanes of traffic while firefighters worked to contain the blaze. By 7:28 a.m., westbound lanes were reopened, but eastbound traffic remained backed up.
The fire was out by 7:45 a.m. CHP logs stated, and one-way traffic control is in place. But Caltrans QuickMap still shows a closure and traffic backed up.
The owner is requesting Buddy’s Towing for removal.

Seems like now and then a car or pickup truck will catch on fire from pulling the grades. The driver has every right to carry ammo if he is not a felon. I am glad he is okay and requested Buddy’s Towing for removal of his burned prize.
Buddy’s has a lock on 299. Any tow from Redding to Arcata must go to them. You can not use another tow company. What’s up with that?
How do you come up with this information? Buddy’s towing operates out of Willow Creek and Arcata. If a person requests a tow from another company that is in the same response area they can be used. There are other tow companies in Arcata but I don’t know of any in Willow Creek. CHP uses a rotation list for tow companies in the response area. You wouldn’t expect them to wait for a tow from Fortuna to go to say Willow Creek would you?
On the CalTrans QuickMap and online the CHP incidents often will not only quote which towing is doing the hauling off, but sometimes their phone number.
This is so untrue I recently had J And M towing provide me tow service on 299
Why bring up the right to carry ammo, just because there was a popping noise? And who the heck is Buddy, kinda weird that they mention that in this article or post or press release or whatever this is called…
Buddy’s Towing is a business. I try to mention the tow companies when I know for sure which one is being used because once a very nice tow driver complained that I talked about which cops and fire departments and even which ambulance but not which tow company.
This can be called an article or a post. All press releases are carefully identified at such at the top of the information, they have a green stripe on the left side and a yellow background. They are not written by a reporter and should be presumed to have a point of view. Reporters just try to give the facts (we’re not perfect about it, but we try.)
Fair enough, and thanks for explanation!
You’re welcome.
Those small explosions could also be the tires popping from the heat and usually that’s the reason. That’s not to say there wasnt ammo inside the truck, but I wouldnt automatically assume.
Both can be true. Glass can make loud popping sounds too when it’s heated up enough.
I know.
I heard 1 big boom this am
