[UPDATED] Shooting in Eureka: One Dead, One Wounded

This morning about 2:45 a.m., two people were shot in the 1300 block of West Avenue near 14th Street in Eureka, according to reports over the scanner.

Chief Steve Watson replied to a request for information by stating, “It is my preliminary understanding we have one deceased male, a second wounded and being treated and no outstanding suspects but I stress this is very preliminary.” He promised more information by noon. “EPD detectives are still on scene executing a search warrant, collecting evidence and processing the scene.”

According to the scanner, EPD officers backed by CHP and HCSO officers rushed to the scene of the shooting immediately after the first report.

Almost as soon as they arrived, CPR was being performed on one person, according to the incident commander speaking over the radio. He added that the second person had a moderate gunshot wound

Six people were detained including one juvenile as officers determined what had occurred.

A roadblock was put up on West Avenue as officers investigated the scene. The road is still closed.

We’ve sent a photographer to the incident and requested more information from the Eureka Police.

Note: this story has been updated with information from Chief Watson.

Reality Melissa. By the way Jay, this is not a tragedy. A tragedy is when for reasons outside their control someone experiences an horrific event. This is a perfectly predictable event based on the fascination today’s young have for the “thug life”. Well, this a manifestation of that fascination.

Okay mike, something tells me that the fact your bring up the death of an unarmed “kid” that was stabbed to death, speaks volumes as to the type of mindset you have. No one but you made that statement. You sound like a racist [edit] just like 80% of the people who live around here. Look at the demographics? Is it a bunch of Mexicans up here growing all the weed and destroying water ways and polluting the land with heavy metals and god knows what chemicals? I’m sure there are cartel grows but who’s really doing the damage? Private land owners? Who owns most the land? White people….family’s that have privileged positions. Last I checked the sheriffs are abating land owners!!! Not gorilla grows on private land that are ran by cartel . No it’s your neighbor and joe’s grandson and Larry’s uncles brother . Do you see where I’m going here? Point the finger at the minorities like we are the problem when in fact who’s the people that run the black market? Are they Mexican? Nope!! Most growers I met around here that have anything of worth are white!!! And they will sell the cartel in LA the Bay Area it’s only obvious while they hide in the midsts if there white privileged communities. It’s been like this for ages people. This racial division has its roots within the black market and mike is a perfect example of someone that embodies that spirit of humboldt that no one wants to talk about…the blatant disregard for A humans life. Yes I said human not black person but you sir could be regarded as an alien as the white race is alien to this land and yes I’m making the assumption that “mike” is probably a middle aged white man with privilege on his plate.

Your rant was extremely racist and I take great offense to it as I am a non privileged, middle aged, white woman. Everyone needs to grow up and stop blaming race and blame those that are guilty singly not as a group. Back down and get along. Life would be much better.

Lol I’m white . Being called racist by other white people !!🤣🤣🙏🏽🤦🏽‍♂️ And a single group of white people havecompletely decimated another race which still suffers to this day. Your ignorance is showing….you should google the term, “structural racism” brown University does some great lectures on it maybe you should educate yourself instead of making up your own ideas, my fellow white person that is probably sitting in a position of privilege trying to call me a racist when you have no idea what your even talking about.

If you’re going to [edit] compare every murder to D.J. Lawson, then I wonder if the police will allow the main suspects vehicle to be driven home 1 hour after the shooting, like they let happen with Kyle’s car and knife bag.

…..or at least vet the “witness” statements for inconsistencies and truthfulness before trying to build a case around them. That was a big criticism in the review of the Lawson case. The crowd should never have been released until the police knew they had reliable information. IMO they copped out and accepted unreliable “witness” statements because to diligently ferret out reliable information could have escalated confrontation with the angry and unruly mob.

By giving racism a voice without allowing it to be shutdown is another form of dictatorship it’s the same thing the Germans did in ww2 which allowed the nazis to take over 🤷🏽‍♂️ My grandfather was a prisoner of war in ww2 and Kim your a disgrace to freedom Nd what he fought Nd died for to protect. That is one big problem with taking everything immediately to the lowest level. If you can’t tell the difference between calling someone names and objecting to a person’s statement, then finding Kym’s moderating inconsistent is inevitable. A person thinking that calling someone stupid is a valid rebuke of something objectionable is always going to be confused when it just creates more spite.

Kym…When you moderate are you looking at the poster’s I.P. or their chosen aliases. Can you determine if one poster is using multiple handles? I know one poster here is using at least 3 different names. Is that common? Anyone using more than 3?

It’s totally common. Loco threads are just a about nothing but. It’s a big game. Commenters are having conversations with themselves under multiple names, backing “eachother ” up. It’s pathetic and it’s happening here also. There’s probably nothing Kym can do about it.

Do you find virtue in using one name just because it means you might have to actually read a comment before accusing the poster of evil? It’s just so much easier to attack a stereotype without having to think about it. But it’s not better for either empathy or reason. So why do you find who says what to be more important than what they say? Do you consider commenting as a popularity contest?

List of people who have suffered from stereotyping reads like a liberal’s Who’s Who- Oscar Wilde, Karl Marx, victims of McCarthyism like Langston Hughes and Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Dreyfus, etc. And does the same for conservative’s list when the temper of the populace goes against them- Fang Zhongmou, Anastasia Romanov, Nicholas Sandmann, Sardar Mohammed Daoud, etc

For some reason this reminded of the shooting death of Sheriff Cox and two others nearly 40 years ago. I am always amused that people look back to the “good old days” of Humboldt County or Eureka like it was a peaceful place before “they” (whoever the “they of the moment is, the current “they” being Covid) showed up.

This. I was just looking up Sheriff Cox’s death and came across this quote from his successor, in November, 1982, in the Times-Standard:

”I don’t comprehend what happened,” said Dave Renner, who was elected in June to replace Cox and will immediately take office.

”It’s a sad, tragic thing, but the Sheriff’s Department will go forward,” he said. “Violent deaths! My God! This is the 22nd Humboldt County has had this year!”

Guest
Guest
Guest

Did you ask yourself why Sheriff Renner was shocked at 22 murders in 1982 but Sheriff Honsal feeling it is a blessing to have only 19 in 2019? When the population was so similar in those two years?

Angela Robinson
Guest

Honsal is relieved that it isn’t as high as 2016? Which had the highest rate in three decades.

Also, the population of Humboldt in 1982 was about 110K, where it’s now 135K. Really, I am just sadly amused that people act like Humboldt County is NOW this hellscape. You should have been here in the 60s and 70s. Especially the 60s. The County lost population in the 60s and early 70s. It was just recovering in 1982.

Early 80s was the economic nadir, but one remark circulating back then was how low the crime was in Arcata. Nobody says that now, after the greenrush. On the plus side, inner Eureka is no longer the totally depressing pit it was back then and it’s now a place people actually want to move to.

Oh yeah, believe me I know. I lived on 2 street in the 70s. Before the initial attempts to rehab it and when that empty lot became the gazebo thingy. Lots of heroin and other drugs, though I managed to avoid that (though some I went to grade school with didn’t). And the hobos (as we called them then). But thai sticks were exotic and seeds and stems were a part of life.

edited to add: 2 Street was also it’s own little community. The Italian market (Celli’s ?), Peggy’s Café, Roy’s….definitely some great things about it.

I am not saying that things don’t suck now, but they have always kind of sucked. Though I love the county I consider my home and would love to move back to, but I married an Oregonian who has no desire to leave.

The 80s may have been the nadir, but the population continued to grow. The timber industry was dying. I think I have mentioned it before, but when the pulp mills came in, some “old” guy said to me that when the pulp mills come in, the logging industry has 30 years left. I don’t know why I remember that comment so well, I was maybe 11 at the time.

Humboldt is also isolated just enough to attract dead enders. Where are they going to go from here? Crescent City?

I should point out that homeless druggies aren’t specific to Humboldt. It’s all over the west coast, even in my little town of 10K.

Thirdeye
Guest
Thirdeye

Inland timber definitely died when rising log prices put all the gyppo operations out of business during the 70s and 80s. Coastal timber did better, but competition from Canada and the Puget-Willamette region keeps it on the margins. Redwood lumber is now a boutique product like Sonoma County wine grapes.

We’ll see whether or not Humboldt remains attractive to dead-enders now that the pot bubble has burst and that dream no longer beckons.

Seeds and stems? Joints? I remember those!

Old growth redwood lumber is now a boutique product. Unfortunately, that wood is now commercially extinct.

The second growth hybridized shit they’re logging now is only fit for fence boards and fools who can be convinced that it’s a great deck material as long as you put stain and Thompson’s Water Seal on it.

The only source for quality old growth redwood lumber now is old buildings, and they’re being destroyed by Figas et al, and sent to the landfill, at the rate of about one a week.
