Citing Overflow Crowds, Mayor of Rio Dell Requests Change of Venue for Wind Turbine Appeal

Garnes Signs Venue Request Letter

Citing overflow crowds in previous meetings, the mayor of Rio Dell, Debra Garnes, is requesting that the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors hold the expected appeal of Terra-Gen’s proposal to build forty-seven 600 foot tall wind turbines in the hills near her community in a larger venue.

She wrote,

It is my understanding that Terra-Gen will appeal the decision of the Humboldt County Planning Commission regarding their wind project proposal. This appeal would be heard by your Board.

As you may have heard, during the three days of Planning Commission meetings related to the project, there were overflow crowds that exceeded the capacity of the Board Chambers and your small conference room. This crowd overflowed into the hallway, competing for space with your security team. Elderly and disabled participants who were both supporters and opponents of this project were denied entry for safety considerations. They were instead forced to stand for hours on end and listen to a small, dated speaker suspended from the ceiling.

At one point, the crowd, which was composed of supporters and opponents of the project, chanted in unison “Let us in! Let us in!”
I know you can do better!

The City of Rio Dell is officially requesting a venue change to a facility that can handle a substantially larger crowd. Furthermore, we are requesting that you hold this meeting here in either Rio Dell or Scotia. I offer my assistance in helping to secure an appropriate venue.

It would be disgusting if they allow this to ruin an otherwise pristine environment. I would take 10 solar farms projects over this wind project.

I’m all for requiring further hearings to be heard in either Rio Dell or Scotia. Afterall, we’re the folks being directly impacted.

Put them offshore. How many times ya gotta be told. PG&E already has a huge investment in seeing the mills go in on the hill. They might have screwed up. They must make money any way they can now, for many reasons and my advice would be to shitcan the mills in the hills and rent out some of their offshore leases at an affordable rate.
You will never see your electricity bill go down any appreciable amount. It just doesn’t happen. It already costs twice as much for juice in Kalifornia as anywhere else in the US.
How stupid is it to deny mills off the coast if you are to have them anywhere. Why put them in some of the most beautiful territory on God’s earth to chop up the wildlife, restrict human activity, and generally bug the shit out of a whole lot of people in all kinds of ways.
Placing them offshore would create a lot more jobs and Eureka could really have a nice port, doing good solid business with a relatively clean industry.

The amount of solar that Humboldt county installed last year was 1.4 MW of solar. At that rate it would take 285 years to match that of the wind project.

The amount of land that would require solar farms to equal the wind project farm is 2.77 square miles. The wind farm project needs 91 acres.

It would also cost an estimated $426 million dollars to install solar, the wind farm is 200 million.

The turbine project will never become carbon neutral, unlike PV panels. You’re right, we need subsidies for micro-grids, not a wind turbine project with piss- poor environmental mitigations and no requirement that the profiteers clean up the site at the end of the projects lifetime.

I tend to agree. We have enough problems with all the ocean clean up.

What motivates a person to put so much effort into supporting this? Are they getting paid?

Then you should asks someone with proper training to explain the EIR to you. And consider the net ecological cost of this project.

Please do yourself, family, children, etc a favor and look deeper into this. This is a wolf in sheep clothing. This is a massive CO2 dump that will never be neutral. Its ugly and what happens when they fail? Your children will be looking at trash on ridge tops. Research the wind farms in upstate NY. This is bad all they way around. Start with your own actions and consumption.

Coincidence?

Indoor grows require alternative energy .
There was an article about a proposed 18 acre indoor facility in this area.
Could be just a coincidence that Humboldt county growers association is a supporter of this.
Just saying

Hold on, first they want us to show up and voice our opinion. We said hell no. It got rejected. NOW, they want an appeal because there was too many citizens present for whatever reasons?

They smell money.

Terra-Gen said they’re going to appeal the planning commission’s decision to the board of supervisors. The meetings are inevitably going to draw even larger crowds. The mayor is bracing for impact. Yes, Terra-Gen, RCEA and financial beneficiaries of the proposal should have been embarrassed to press their proposal after the first few meetings. Now they should be ashamed to be trying to force it.
