This morning Sheriff’s deputies are on scene investigating the report of a gunshot wound associated with a possible burglary in the Redwood Road area of Shelter Cove. According to Lt. Kenny Swithenbank, “At this time it appears that the possible suspect in the burglary was the one wounded.”

Swithenbank said that currently the wound is believed to be non-life threatening.

UPDATE 11:45 a.m.: The suspect was shot with a non-lethal rubber shotgun round typically used for crowd control situations, according to Lt. Swithenbank. However, the person firing the round was not with law enforcement.

UPDATE 3:20 p.m.:

  • Hell yeah . This sends a message. The cove has been dealing with this garbage every other week since last winter . About time !

  • Nice! Ive been thinkin of getting one of those. Do they sell them at gun shows?Especially since the sheriffs where i live wont respond to burglaries, even with pics of the thieves with stolen items in their hands and we have the thiefs address.
I bet rock salt guns would work well too.

    • It’s actually easy to make your own Rock Salt rounds!!! Open the shotgun shell dump out the shot (the BB things) then replace it with Rock Salt easily purchased nearly anywhere, then seal it back up & you’re good to go!!! Leave a Lasting memory of the “one who shot back”
      on the criminals!!!!

      • Make sure you use low base or it will be fatal at close range, I’m sure you will probably do some jail time in ca for it also.

    • You can buy them at Brown’s in Gville.

  • Wether you have a gun or not you can get insurance that will protect you in case of legal action from an incident when you protect yourself or your family for as low as $22 per month. Your home owners insurance will not help. See the website I included.

  • How’s that whole burglary thing working out for you, Dipshit?

  • Nice way to go shelter Cove this is how a community should deal with scum like this. Two thumbs up shelter Cove

  • Whoever fired that rubber bullet is a hero! And the Shelter Cove community, especially the R.I.D.government should support this person and all the locals who came together to protect its community! Someone has to do it! And it was a Fact that a home was being burglarized yet again! The p.o.s. was caught on camera!

What does “However the person firing the round was not with law enforcement” supposed to mean???? If you are burgled are you supposed to wait for them to bring the rubber bullets?

    • No, I was clarifying that the shooter was not law enforcement that had arrived on the scene. Not everyone apparently understood that.

    • Don’t worry, do not use force it could cause trouble, our good liberals in California are anti gun. So when a thief is robbing your house, and you are there, and you have only a few seconds to live, don’t worry the police are only 20 minutes away.

      • Lost Croat Outburst

When seconds count, the police are only minutes, days, or months away. Or wrong jurisdiction. Oh, sorry, just another gun-loving liberal chiming in. Say, why did patriotic, loyal conservatives vote America into the toilet with DJT? Wow, that sure worked! USA circles the drain, Putin is dancing his Slavic Happy Dance. Thanks for nothing.

      • Why do you live in California if you feel that way?

  • Ha Ha Ha! The thief didn’t know they were rubber bullets. Must have scared the crap out of him! LOL!

  • Concerned citizen

    Haha. Good job citizen!

  • The cops werent responding until the dude was shot. Out here we have to look out for our own. The words out. Think twice before before ripping people off out here.

  • Pinch of Salt River

Burglar will be out in a couple days, but the possession of rubber bullets and gun may put the homeowner/victim in jail for a few weeks and cost him thousands.
Nobody wins because of that loser!

  • This looks like someone we all know?? Is it? Cove local?

  • Lucky asshole. He could’ve gotten a real bullet. I admire the homeowners preparedness. 👍👍

  • Why haven’t they named the burglars involved?

  • Glad to hear that people in the cove are taking care of each other. Hopefully everyone keeps there mouth shut and no one gets in trouble except the burglar.

  • Unless the cops, fire department etc are already there, YOU are the first responder.

  • lorrie neuenfeldt

Good job! He is a Hero!

  • I suggest putting up servailence signs like I have .I love my servailence cameras I have 4 cameras they look in 4 different directions covering my home . I highly recommend everyone getting these systems here in Humboldt County now its Preventive maintenance my sign has a picture of a camera on it, so in case the perps can’t read they can figure that out it says 24 hour surveillance trespassers will be prosecuted, but with Maggie Fleming they might not be charged.

    • agreed- but these guys will also find the dvr in the house and steal it too. needs to hidden or locked up in a safe, these fucktards had all kinds of lock picks in their pockets and a trunk full of tools for ripping houses off, they’ve been at it a while..

  • Lostcoast and found

Good job catching this wild turkey! hopefully he will be couped up for a while.

  • …also put a padlock on your meter/panel, it’s easy to shut power off to the house to disable camera without a lock, I have a lock on my panel and my cameras and dvr have a battery back up available at Costco.

    • Thanks for telling people- super smart- eliminate your post- why give knowledge to people???

      • If you have service get cellular cameras, even if they take the camera you will have the pics, WiFi too they should be backed up to the cloud,

  • There’s an online company that sells all kinds of shotgun shells. Fioccchi.http://www.fiocchiusa.com
Check it out, they have many non-lethal options.

  • Great work Cove watch! Consider helping the Dungess crabs with your next catch.

  • Kim, why did you delete my comment? Alll I was saying that he is lucky is was just a rubber billet. I myself and many other people here in Shelter Cove are only armed with real live ammunition. I am not saying the suspect deserves to die, I’m saying home intruders beware. Not everyone has rubber bullets and if you try to grab my gun during a citizens arrest, or you break into my house with me inside sleeping, that’s your karma, whatever happens to you.

    • Karma, I try to keep violent threats off my website. You may have merely meant it as a warning but, with my limited understanding, I believe you are advocating violently breaking the law. The law, in its infinite wisdom, does not allow people to shoot someone unless they are in fear of their life. That means you can’t shoot someone stealing your goods.

      • Hi Kim
criminals breaking into an occupied dwelling encounter California “Castle doctrine”
which states in “California Penal Code 198.5.

Any person using force intended or likely to cause death or great bodily injury within his or her residence shall be presumed to have held a reasonable fear of imminent peril of death or great bodily injury to self, family, or a member of the household when that force is used against another person, not a member of the family or household, who unlawfully and forcibly enters or has unlawfully and forcibly entered the residence and the person using the force knew or had reason to believe that an unlawful and forcible entry occurred.

As used in this section, great bodily injury means a significant or substantial physical injury.”

nb criminals on a “hot prowl/home invasion”
ie breaking into an occupied dwelling are held to the above..
they are presumed to have deadly intent in mind and homeowners responding with deadly force are within the law in California as stated above”

        anon traveler

  • Stand your ground!! Hip hip hooray

  • The person that shot the round was not with law enforcement? So? That rubber bullet was traveling faster then any sheriff in the entire County! So now what

  • I get my rubber bullets at Browns!
Haven’t had the pleasure to use them on Intruders yet.
I will continue to support Browns as I’m hearing bigger companies wanting to move right in next door selling the same type of goods which is unacceptable. The Chamber of Commerce should not allow these shenanigans of corporate business takeovers when some of our small town businesseshave served the community for three generations or more. Let’s continue to support our small mom and pop operations and against corporate takeovers people!

    • LOL. America is a capitalist country. What’s wrong with competition? Everyone always talks big before a corporate store moves to their town ‘I’ll never shop there’ but it doesn’t take them long to conform because it saves them money and they have no backbone to resist. Retail space in G’ville is owned by a few people who’ve increased rents so you can kiss most local businesses goodbye. Starbucks is coming next.

  • Mr. Not-So-Sweet is the owner of the building (and the entire block) so that’s on him if he lets someone come into town and whipe Browns off the map. Wouldn’t be surprised in the least that guy is nothing but a power hungry narcisisist.

  • yup-get ready for big box in Garberville—-the new sport store will possibly cause the downfall of at least four long time local businesses

  • Right on you bagged a dirt bag I was hopeing to bag one this year but had no luck

  • Make sure you have a lethal round after that rubber buckshot or rubber bullet just in case he keeps coming I have one right next to my bed only one rubber bullet the rest are all leathal ,

    • For sure bro all slugs after the first rubber ball! If the ball isnt gonna stop em the slug will permanently shut ya down.
Hes lucky covesters were humane, up on murder mountain you’ll just disappear and become one with the mountain.

  • Eric black

  • Whats up i hear after they got taken away they dumped gas in the burglar car and lit there car on fire like it was nothing if your going to uphold the law then you should do it dont break the law and be scum like them but i would have done the same thing if i were in there shoes
