Covelo Woman Identified as Victim in April 19 Shooting; Teen Suspect Extradited to Mendocino County

A Covelo woman killed in an early morning shooting last weekend has been identified as Audrey Card, 38, according to an updated press release from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office issued Thursday.

Card was shot on a dirt road near Charlie Hurt Highway in Covelo on April 19. She was transported by a private citizen to the Covelo Volunteer Fire Department, and when no personnel were found there, to a nearby address on South Airport Road, where deputies and Round Valley Tribal Police officers performed CPR until paramedics arrived. She was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 6:55 a.m.

An autopsy performed April 22 found the preliminary cause of death to be multiple gunshot wounds. The manner of death has been ruled a homicide. Final cause and manner of death will not be released until the forensic pathologist completes all associated reports, according to MCSO.

A 16-year-old male juvenile from Covelo has been identified as the suspect. According to investigators, the teen had previously been in a dating relationship with a 15-year-old female juvenile. In the hours before Card’s death, the suspect allegedly chased the girl through Covelo in a vehicle, fired a gun from the moving vehicle, forced her out of her car at gunpoint, and physically assaulted her. The girl was able to escape and reported the incident to family members.

Card was on the phone with the 15-year-old when the shooting occurred. The girl reportedly heard gunshots in the background during the call.

The suspect fled the area and was located at a restaurant in Oroville on April 21. He fled on foot when officers attempted to arrest him but was apprehended after a short pursuit by Oroville Police Department officers. He was subsequently extradited to Mendocino County and booked at Mendocino County Juvenile Hall, where he is awaiting criminal proceedings.

He faces charges of murder, personal use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, stalking, criminal threats, and domestic battery. Juvenile names are not released under California law.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office at 707-463-4086 (option 1), or anonymously via the tip line at 707-234-2100.

When will covelo join the human race? Build an escape proof barrier around it post guard towers, and make another pelican bay prison.

Maybe this young man can turn his life around. He’ll have lots of time to make changes locked in prison for the next couple decades.
But you know, fuck it. Let’s build an open air prison around an entire community and not actually come up with any concrete ideas or solutions. Seems rational

I’d hope that might work to keep you out, Apopa. Covelo is a friendly place; been here for decades and respect and appreciate the folks, the fish, and the soil, too. I learned quickly to understand our lives to be interdependant. One’s life may one night depend on the stranger you haven’t yet met. So be a good person to all.

16 years old. Will he be tried as an adult? I sure hope so! Behavior like this didn’t appear out of nowhere. Is there really any chance of rehabbing somebody this violently disturbed? I think he should be locked up forever away from society because anything else will be subjecting more innocent people to his violence…And yes- if we had capital punishment I think it’s debatable whether it should be extended to this…

Well not everyone in Round Valley is a cold blooded killer. Most are just trying to survive like most normal people. But you have a right to your opinion.

I read it more like a prejudicial, racist statement. But that’s just me. Covelo is a beautiful valley with great people.

A fifteen year old girl and a sixteen year old boy, she’s fleeing in a car, he’s chasing after her in another vehicle shooting at the car. It’s not even six o’clock in the morning! What were these kids doing, up all night, what kinds of substances might be involved in such bad behavior? Remember this from years ago: “It’s eleven o’clock, where are your children?”
