Information from Caltrans District 1 on Facebook:

🚧 HEADS UP ON ROUTE 36: Travelers in Humboldt County should continue to expect delays on Route 36 near Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park. We will have up to 30-minute delays Monday, July 1. This will be for helicopter operations to set the rockfall drapery netting on the smaller Grizzly Creek slide. We will provide further updates here when planned delays are expected to exceed 20 minutes.
Remember to check quickmap.dot.ca.gov or the QuickMap app for the latest road conditions on all state highways.

Sure, glad that no one in that spot when the boulder came down. I don’t think that the bucket loader will stand a chance on moving this big guy.

Do you actually think the netting would have stopped big boulder from reaching the road?

From what I’ve witnessed they appear to have been trying to remove as many potential sources of rockfall as possible before putting the nets on.

I do actually think that it’s silly to criticize an intervention based on a lack of information or specific knowledge

I have plenty of knowledge on the netting. It has been used in many places and does fine with small rocks, but this big guy would have just gone on through. I also don’t think they will ever be able to remove all the rocks that will fall along that bluff. When winter comes more will show their ugly faces and race downhill.
