Kim Kardashian and Tobey Maguire Spotted in Crescent City

The Chart Room in Crescent City is an unlikely place to celebrity watch but those who happened to be at the seaside eatery at the south of town on January 11, were treated to not one, but two, famous faces.

Kim Kardashian and Tobey Maguire are reported to have had lunch at the seafood restaurant with local residents while a film crew captured the interaction. At this time, it is unknown exactly why the two were visiting the county seat of remote Del Norte County, just 20 miles south of the Oregon border.

Maguire, an actor and film producer best known for his role as the title character in the Spider-Man franchise, was overshadowed by Kardashian’s presence. One Facebook user wrote, “Kim Kardashian is here and so is the guy who played Spiderman Tobey McGuire [sic]”

Multiple pictures of Kardashian were shared on social media as word spread of Kardashian’s presence to the coastal town’s approximate 6,700 residents. One post stated the reality star and business mogul was spotted at Pebble Beach prior to visiting the Chart Room. Doubting residents questioned why Kardashian would visit the beautiful, yet remote, location.

Several residents speculated that Kardashian and Macquire may be in town to tour Pelican Bay Prison, a supermax facility located on the northern edge of Crescent City. Although the tour is unconfirmed at this time, we believe that speculation has merit.

Since 2018, Kardashian has been using her celebrity to champion prison reform. Kardashian was previously heralded as a key component to former-President Donald Trump signing the bipartisan First Step Act, a bill to reduce recidivism and incentivize inmates to participate in evidence-based programs to reduce recidivism. During a White House visit in March 2020, then-President Trump met with Kardashian and several ex-inmates whose prison sentences Trump commuted.

In April of 2020, Kardashian’s efforts were aired on the Oxygen Channel in the documentary, ‘Kim Kardashian West: The Justice Project’. Some applauded the reality star for using her celebrity to highlight issues in the American justice system while others criticized her, stating that she was using the reform movement to rebrand herself.

Since the Oxygen documentary, Kardashian has continued her reform efforts though they are not as heavily publicized as her earlier work. In 2021, Kardashian worked to get a stay of execution for death-row inmate Julius Jones, and again in 2022 for Melissa Lucio. Both death-row inmates maintain their innocence.

Could Kardashian be visiting a Pelican Bay Prison inmate in a bid to reduce their sentence? Or could she be touring the supermax prison to see, firsthand, the notorious prison conditions that have led to hunger strikes and lawsuits in the past? A 2013 article in Mother Jones titled, ‘America’s 10 Worst Prisons: Pelican Bay‘ by James Ridgeway and Jean Casella, detailed issues within the confines of the 275-acre prison.

Or perhaps Kardashian is interested in the Del Norte County Jail after an article published by the Wild Rivers Outpost in April 2022 showed an inmate’s cell in horrific conditions.

Alternately, Kardashian and Maguire’s visit could have absolutely nothing to do with her work in prison reform. Crescent City boasts amazing coastlines and stunning Redwood forests; perhaps they came for the view. Or maybe, just maybe, the Chart Room Restaurant was the main attraction after all.
