Reports we are getting from the town of Redway indicate power is off for the entire community. Whitethorn is also out. Garberville does have power but doesn’t have Wave internet.

Reports from the community indicate the outage started about 1:35 p.m.

Soon after reports of the power outage began coming in, a dispatcher sent aircraft and ground crews to a fire burning south of Ettersburg about two and a half miles up Ettersburg Road.

The Air Attack crew reported that the fire is about a half acre in size and spreading slowly. There are structures nearby but none currently threatened.

UPDATE 2:28 p.m.: We’re being told that flames are within 20 yards of a structure.

UPDATE 3:17 p.m.: Firefighters are making progress but have asked for an extra water tender. Wave internet is back on in Garberville. Power is restored in many areas.

UPDATE 4:40 p.m.: Forward progress has been stopped at about a half acre in size. Fire crews are working on containment. All air support has been released from the fire.

UPDATE 5 p.m.: According to Peter Lawsky, Chief of Telegraph Ridge Fire Department, “There is a line around the Wolf fire, crews are still actively fighting the fire. The fire is approximately 1 acre.”

He said, “A tree dropped into the powerlines and started the fire.”

Thanks to Telegraph Ridge Fire Department, Briceland Fire Department, three Cal Fire engines, and the Cal Fire Helicopter, as well as the air attack and a tanker were all fighting the fire during the course of the afternoon.

Please consider supporting your local fire departments who donate their time and sometimes put their lives on the line to protect the rest of us. See comment section for a list of all the VFD’s in the area and the way to send a donation.

UPDATE 5:52 p.m.: Code 3 medical was dispatched to Wolf incident for a person with a heat related illness. The patient was transported to a road access point

Guess they’re in mop up mode now since all air support seems to have left.

Did the tree fall from natural causes or was this from someone falling it? Thought the tree trimmers took care of all the potential tree hazards around here.

At my place they cut a bunch of trees that were healthy and straight, and left larger trees that lean heavily towards the lines. Most of the “foresters” that were here to mark the trees impressed as young, inexperienced, and often just out of school. The whole program is poorly conceived.

Visiting Petrolia today for the library, they report that they have had no phone or internet service in the Mattole Valley since Saturday morning. Their power was also turned off due to the downed lines from the Wolf fire.

Thanks for sharing! My mother in law lives in Petrolia and I’ve been so worried because we haven’t been able to reach her.

Internet and phones have been down since Saturday morning and Frontier is denying it’s out. Came back to Eureka to call them and they setup a tech for July 10th. That’s 17 days of no service just to send someone to look at it. We just setup yesterday to have 101netlink to change service providers.

A huge thank you to all the firefighters that worked so hard to contain and snuff out the fire before it had a chance to turn into a raging blaze. I pray the person with heat related issues will quickly recover.

I’m having a hard time believing it was caused by a downed electrical line. First, power was restored too quickly. Second, Google Earth shows the electric lines running only on the downhill side of the fire, not anywhere close too it. You can even see them in this pic just below that structure in the middle. And then they go towards the upper right corner of the pic into the trees there.

Are you thinking a “fire bug” has struck again?

No, but there are hoop houses and a structure of some sort in that vicinity.
I don’t think it could have been any closer to the Telegraph Ridge fire station though.
