Press release from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2207:

On Saturday, June 15th, Fortuna area military veterans will hold a flag retirement ceremony to respectfully and ceremoniously retire old, damaged or faded US flags.

Veterans from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2207 will hold a solemn ceremony prior to the flag retirement event, on Saturday beginning at 10am; behind the main Fortuna Fire Station located at 320 South Fortuna Blvd.

Firefighters from the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department will assist with the event to ensure that flames from the flag retirement ceremony remain under control.  Currently, there are 400 pounds of flags to be retired.

The ceremony is held each year, coinciding with national Fl;ag Day,  to properly dispose of flags that are no longer in a condition to be publicly displayed.

In accordance with U.S. Government regulations, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

Flags which are in a condition that they should no longer be displayed can be brought to the Fortuna Veterans Memorial Building and deposited in the red, white and blue container at the front of the building.

Do a quick research on the American flag and what it can be used for and not. Educate yourself. Here is a free Google search token.

They are not supposed to be flown upside down on a whim, but people do…

A big thank you to the veterans that are holding the proper disposal of the American flag when it is not fit to be flown anymore. I am extremely proud of all our veterans both living a deceased. All gave some and some gave all! God bless each and every one of you.

I’m sorry, but this is just stupid. Creating more toxic air pollution by burning (what is surely) synthetic, petroleum-based fabric because it has a certain pattern printed on it makes no sense. I hope the firefighters don’t inhale the smoke.

The firefighters are saving the smoke for you to keep. All old and not flown American flags are disposed in this way and it has not killed anyone yet.
