After a abundant amount of rain fell on us in Fall of 2024, our region is back into a wintertime “Juneuary” period of sunny and dry weather bringing with it conditions that are once again good for prescribed burning.
[Today], Mon January 27th, the Southern Humboldt Chapter of the HCPBA has planned to burn a unit of the Old Briceland project that could be as large as 40 acres of forest understory. Goals include; fuels reduction, forest health, cultural objectives, and supporting a larger strategic fuelbreak west of Garberville.
Factors such as potential smoke impacts and expected fire behavior are closely examined before any ignitions begin. Local fire agencies will be assisting and smoke may be visible from Redway, Ettersburg Rd, Briceland Rd, Alderpoint Rd, and Hwy 101 @ Dean Creek.
Additionally there is another HCPBA burn planned near Titlow Hill Rd outside of the town of Blue Lake in Northern Humboldt on Tuesday, Jan. 28th.
For more information on prescribed burning please see the Humboldt County Prescribed Burn Association website at; http://www.humcopba.net and follow our social media account on FB at https://www.facebook.com/hcpba to get updates. And, if you ever wondered about just how these burns are organized and permitted, there is a an amazing resource you can see online; the Humboldt County Prescribed Burn Manual.

Prescribed burns should be used when the weather allows. Getting the brush, dead trees, limbs burned now will make it much easier to stop a wildland fire. The Indians did this many years ago and with great results. When doing a prescribed burn, I would hope they keep enough trucks (tankers) to snuff out anything that appears to be going out of control.
But I thought today was a no burn day?
