Press release from the Office of Congressman Jared Huffman:

Today, Rep. Jared Huffman (CA-02) was announced as Ranking Member of the House Natural Resources Committee for the 119th Congress.

“It is the honor of my lifetime to win this election and be named Ranking Member of the Natural Resources Committee. My entire career has been centered around natural resources – from my time as an attorney at the Natural Resources Defense Council to the past twelve years serving on this committee,” said Rep. Huffman. “I am incredibly grateful to the many partners who have supported me in my journey – tribes from around the country, environmental allies, and the overwhelming majority of my colleagues I’ve served with here in the House. I will work day-in and day-out to honor the trust they have put in me to lead this committee. We have weathered many storms together and I believe we are better prepared than ever to tackle what lies ahead next Congress. This is a team sport, and I am excited and ready to lead this team.”

Rep. Huffman is a proven and qualified leader, earning commitments from over 170 of his colleagues in this election. Huffman has served on HNRC for the past 12 years and served as a Subcommittee Chair/Ranking Member for the past 10 years. Huffman also represents a district that gives him a unique perspective and comprehensive insight on the issues reflected in Natural Resources. His district:

Has more indigenous tribes than any district outside of Alaska;

Includes a vast array of public lands and waters;

Experiences some of the worst impacts of the climate crisis;

Is at the forefront of innovative climate solutions.

Prior to Congress, he worked as a California legislator chairing environmental committees, an environmental attorney with the Natural Resources Defense Council, and Board President for a major municipal water district.

This announcement comes after his challenger dropped out following a 44-17 vote in the Steering and Policy Committee last night. The outpouring of support Huffman received during this race has included:

There’s no more federal money coming for the preposterous offshore wind project so Huffman can kids his Green Hoax goodbye! Save the whales! Save Humboldt’s environment and lifestyle! Keep industry out!

The hysteria about climate is really a silly distraction from environmental issues that we should be focused on addressing, such as reducing our plastic consumption / waste [especially in Asia], stopping deforestation to mitigate biodiversity loss and increasing efforts to reduce emission of actual air pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), carbon monoxide (CO) and tropospheric ozone (O₃).

If you think that carbon dioxide (CO₂) — an inert, non-flammable gas required for photosynthesis to sustain life on Earth — is pollution, you might as well just stop breathing since there is >38,000 ppm of it in every exhalation you make. CO₂ isn’t toxic by inhalation at the concentrations experienced in the Earth’s atmosphere, which has been as low as 180 ppm and as high as 7,000 in the last 600 million years.

The CO₂ level on the U.S. Navy’s nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines is on the order of a few thousand ppm, and can exceed 10,000 ppm with little or no drowsiness amongst submariners, and it isn’t even remotely lethal or particularly toxic to life at those levels.

What’s more, the current atmospheric CO₂ concentration is only at about 423 ppm. Despite a population increase to eight billion people and more than 200 years of burning ancient carbon, we are still only 51% of the way to doubling the concentration from pre-industrial levels. We probably don’t have enough fossil fuel reserves to get us back to levels we have seen in the geological past on the order of several thousand ppm.

Has it made the Earth a little warmer?

Yes.

It is something we should be extremely worried about?

Probably not.

We need to focus on more serious issues pressing society.

nature contributes about 750 gt’s of CO2, man made contributes about 50 gt’s. not much considering all the bruhaha. how the gov can fix it with your money is anyone’s guess.

The only thing this idiot should be a ranking member of is Huffers Anonymous. He’s not in it for anything other than his rich loser friends. He will never represent me on any level.

Unfortunately it seems like nearly all politicians from BOTH parties are only concerned about enriching their already-rich friends. Many people feel this way and I think it had a lot to do with Trump’s amazing victory as he spoke in a populist fashion. Yet Trump also loves and admires the rich and wealthy despite his rhetoric in support of regular Americans. I am expecting him to quickly push that one more big tax break for the wealthiest. Many of us hope for the best but I predict that when enough regular folks realize Trump doesn’t give a crap about their poor asses…that is when the inevitable class war begins in earnest. The shooting of the insurance CEO and the reactions of anger -at the victim!- should not be underestimated. There is a sleeping giant of anger and frustration at the ever-expanding gap in wealth distribution. They- yes, the strategists for the wealthy- will attempt to turn it into some race issue as always…I guess we shall see….
