With the Recent Election Results, Human Rights Commission Reaffirms Humboldt County’s Sanctuary Status

Welcome to our letters to the editor/opinion section. To submit yours for consideration, please send to [email protected]. Please consider including an image to be used–either a photograph of you or something applicable to the letter. However, an image is not necessary for publication.

Remember opinions expressed do not necessarily reflect that of Redheaded Blackbelt nor have we checked the letters for accuracy.

letter to the editorThe Humboldt County Human Rights Commission (HCHRC) feels the time is right to issue a reminder that Humboldt County is a Sanctuary County. As a county Commission charged with advising the Board of Supervisors and others of the need to protect the rights of all residents of our county, the HCHRC takes this role seriously.

With the recent election results we are reminded of promises made to engage in mass deportations and other actions against immigrants. Our goal is to assure that residents with legal rights are protected from unlawful and inhuman actions. The HCHRC is charged to identify discrimination throughout our county, and to recommend to the Board of Supervisors possible ways to address such problems.

As chair, I will place this issue on the agenda of our next meeting, December 5, 2024 (hybrid, including zoom access) .at 5:30pm. Members of the public are invited to attend and comment on any agenda item. It is an obligation of all members of our society to demand that ignorant and unlawful actions be rejected for the good of all members of our community. The Commission also operates a phone message line for any questions, comments, or suggestions—(707-268-2548). A commissioner will return your call only if you leave your phone number.

Respectfully submitted,

Jim Glover, Chair

Humboldt County Human Rights Commission

Big difference between an immigrant and an illegal alien as a rule of law.

How about sticking up for our rights in general? Do you feel the need to chime in to tell us your protecting non citizens. How about sticking up for the actual citizens? Has that ever occurred to you. And just another committee sucking away our tax money.

Yes, i did not know we have a ”committee” for our rights. That is awesome. Our rights have been violated by the Democrats who allowed million of migrants to come into our country ILLEGALLY. And when President Trump has ICE work on rounding up the criminals of this group to deport, our Humboldt County Human Rights Commission should be right there to help out. Good job Jim, for looking out for this community.

Lauren B. Peña, a Republican activist from Texas, said that hearing Trump’s calls for mass deportations, as well as terms like “illegals” and “invasion” thrown around at the convention, made her feel uncomfortable. Like some Republicans in Congress who have advanced balanced approaches to immigration, she hopes Trump is just blustering.

“He’s not meaning to go and deport every family that crosses the border, he means deport the criminals and the sex offenders,” Peña said.

Jim Glover and HCHRC are idiots if they think criminals should be protected from deportation – but advocates for mass deportation are equally idiotic.

It’s not possible to deport 10, 12 or 15 million people without collapsing the U.S. economy – it’s also not possible from a practical or fiscal standpoint – the U.S. government does not have the infrastructure or budget to support mass deportations.

Deporting illegals while rapidly importing legal immigrants will mitigate any US economic impact and improve the quality of our population, only the best and brightest. Bring back the Braceros Program, in the country to work six months, living in employer supplied housing, and then mandatory return to country of origin, apply for another round next year if interested

Ha, ha! You should stick to cutting and pasting nonsense from X.

Again, there is no infrastructure or budget to support mass deportation.

And there is no employer housing for a renewed bracero program.

Well a start on budget and infrastructure would be taking the border agents who are busy being illegal immigrants traffic cops taking asylum requests, handing out hearing dates two or three years away, providing transportation to various cities then sending FEMA funds to them to house illegals indefinitely and let them actually deport people. Then of course, if sanctuary governments would call up ICE before they release people they arrest, that would relieve some of the cost too. These sanctuary entities have really bought into the spin immigrant lobbyists give out to arrive at being untroubled with one government agency being totally fine with carrying out illegal activity as long as it’s another government level being disrespected. What doofuses. How do they think their dismissal of government authority plays out at a later point when someone dismisses them in turn? Gangs? Drug cartels? Frauds? All grist for the same mill.
idk how many illegals are actually in any sort of meaningful economy but certainly some industries like meat packing or janitorial contractors would be heavily impacted. But there are always bureaucratic work arounds like temporary work passes if illegals registered that could be used to keep them going. But it would mean that such industries would need to stop their deceitful hiring practices in the future. It certainly would be hard for some to get over their ignoring of labor and immigration laws but then that practice has huge costs too when they are in competition with these honest employers. You have some sort of Hollywood movie Nazi storm troopers scenario in mind going on but it’s not likely this vision of “mass deportation” is real. It would be slower, less dramatic but more long term. The simple recession of 20 years ago resulted in immigrants doing self “mass deportations” when the jobs dried up. Not much infrastructure costs needed.

Stop offering government assistance to them and meaningfully penalize those who employ them. Those two things would have many choosing to leave. An incentive could be allowing those who leave voluntarily to possibly return through legal pathways.

Yes, it is harsh.

Jim Glover, your letter states, “It is an obligation of all members of our society to demand that ignorant and unlawful actions be rejected for the good of all members of our community.”

It is unlawful action for illegals to cross our borders. It is unlawful for them to work in this country. It is unlawful for them to demand their “rights” as they don’t have rights in this country. Furthermore, it isn’t just unlawful, but treason for a US citizen in a leadership role to make a city, county or state “sanctuary” for these criminals. Hopefully, the next administration will keep his promise to deport until all these criminals are no longer within the borders or my country. Hopefully, those, like you, who are also criminals for failing to uphold the constitution, will be held accountable. Your actions are a disgrace.

Any person, entity, government that interferes with enforcement of federal law certainly shouldn’t be receiving any funding from federal coffers, those most responsible arrested for obstruction of justice.

I agree. Illegals should be deported. What is wrong with common sense? If you don’t want to cooperate then file for Ca.to leave our United States of America. Together we are strong, divided we are not.

“Local police cannot interfere with sanctuary. But, ICE officers with warrants can arrest undocumented immigrants at any place, including congregations. The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) is a piece of federal immigration law issued by Congress that prohibits harboring an undocumented immigrant. Those who break the Act may face years in prison.”

Does this mean Jim Glover is guilty of harboring undocumented immigrants?

Un and Over asks:
“Does this mean Jim Glover is guilty of harboring undocumented immigrants?”

No – only if he is hiding or sheltering them.

Remember, words have meaning – Webster’s is your friend.

Yes. “Webster’s is your friend.” Offering a refuge is “harboring”. Can’t get anymore in that direction than insisting on sanctuary areas. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/harbor

All that the Sanctuary ordinance says is that county government won’t spend any county money (including paid time by county employees) investigating or attempting to enforce issues related to federal immigration law.
It explicitly directs county employees to comply with any lawful commands from federal agents, any federal laws, or any court orders. And it explicitly states that any provisions of the ordinance will be suspended if a state or federal law arises that would cause that provision to cost humboldt county federal funds.
So it isn’t “offering refuge” to anyone. It’s simply directing local government employees not to concern themselves with federal immigration law unless they are legally obligated to by a higher authority.

IE a safe harbor. Everything a givernment entity does is done by paying an employee to do it. Notifying ICE costs money. So no notifying. Safe harbor. Verifying legal authority to work or social security number costs money. So no E-verify. Getting a college grant? In-State tuition? Cross the border illegally then ask for asylum? Work permitted. Medi-Cal. “The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services do NOT consider receipt of health, food, and housing benefits as part of the public charge determination. Therefore, using Medi-Cal benefits (except for residential nursing home or mental health institution care) will NOT hurt an individual’s immigration status.” “DHCS is working collaboratively with the County Welfare Directors Association of California, county social services agencies, Covered California, consumer advocates, and other interested parties to ensure a successful implementation. ” So no verifying but will pay for outreach and enrolling.

Yeah, our county is directed not to expend county resources on federal immigration law enforcement or investigation.

Immigration is a federal issue. The states are under no obligation to enforce or investigate federal laws. The federal executive and judicial branches have jurisdiction here and can choose to allocate resources to enforce laws as they see fit. The federal legislature could also choose to pass a law that required states to enforce immigration law, and if it survived the inevitable legal battle that would change things. They could also choose to tie certain federal funds to enforcement of Immigration laws, like they’ve done for drinking age and speed limits.

Until they do, no state is under any legal obligation to expend their resources enforcing these federal laws.

I think what we will see forming are citizen groups that report to ICE the location of illegal immigrants. The situation has reached a serious point of pushback and this is due to the loose DEM policies. Thank that “Border Czar” Kamala Harris for what’s about to happen…unfortunately some who should be allowed refuge here will be swept up. That’s what happens when you do it so sloppily you lose the election to the reformers…

The only thing I would quibble with there is that republicans happily went along with the nonborder policies for years. Trump is the first in a long time to try to do more than just talk about it.

And I agree that the situation is creating a ripe ground for vigilantism and generally is creating a huge amount of discord. It’s too bad we’ve got a federal government that is primarily focused on serving their corporate owners than the public they are ostensibly employed by

America has a way to enter legally. If you refuse this option and come over the back fence just like in my yard it will have consequences. All who cross over the back fence need to get back in line . And any who commit crime should be banned for life from this great country.

The real truth why Gavin Newscum and Dumboldt are harboring illegals is because they are obviously paid and comprised by cartels and because illegals are the only way they can cheat and remain in power by letting them vote. It is completely obvious what is happening here. Illegals bring in the drugs, politician’s get paid, sickos get sex trafficked victims, agriculture and business get cheap workers they can mistreat and abuse. If you are pro illegals then you are involved in these crimes knowingly or unknowingly so ppl who are pro illegals are very suspect at this point. It is getting to be very clear to see who is who at this point in the game.

Ignorant and unlawful? Sounds like Jim is describing himself, especially ignorant. It’s time Jim man’s up. Jim can do this by welcoming 5 alien families into his own home. Preferably, one from the Congo, one from Serbia, one from Ukraine Azov battalion, , one from Russia, and one from Croatia. The problem for Jim is he would never do this and live by his own words. See Jim, it’s simple to make pronouncements when you have no skin in the game, and you do not. So besides being ignorant about cultural assimilation and immigration laws, Jim is a total fraud. Don’t be fooled by traveling medicine salesmen. Like Chief Dan George stated in Josey Wales to the traveling elixir salesman, “You drink it.”

If you entered illegal, you should be deported. Making our county a sanctuary county is b.s. We can’t even take care of our citizens let alone the criminal aspect that comes with the illegals. How much are our supervisors getting paid from cartels to endanger our livelihood? Obviously they are more concerned for the illegals than the citizens. Thank God that Trump was elected. Now things will be turning over from the blue shit show to red, making the United States the main concern.

About 1.85 million illegal aliens in California.
Mass deportation would also solve the er… ‘housing crisis’ !

Bad for Newsom and Bonta though.

If you look around and think illegal aliens are the problem, then you aren’t paying attention. I wish we would focus on the real issues, not the made up ones.
