Powell

Celebrated local artists David Powell, tenor, and John Chernoff, piano, will present “Songs of Thanksgiving,” a vocal recital, at Christ Episcopal Church, at H and 15th Streets, Eureka, on Sunday, November 24, at 4:00 p.m.  The program will feature Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Songs of Travel and Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs. Powell and Chernoff appeared together in August 2024, performing Chernoff’s own James Joyce Song Cycle as part of the Trinidad Bay Art & Music Festival.  Christ Church, known for its stunning redwood interior and resonant acoustics, continues its tradition of featuring locally, nationally, and internationally known concert artists in concert.  You are sure to enjoy this collaboration between two of Humboldt County’s finest musicians, performing together in a beautiful space.

Humboldt County native David Powell graduated with an MA in Physical Theater from Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theater and a BA in Music Performance from Humboldt State University.  He studied opera at the Boston Conservatory and trained privately with Juilliard faculty in New York, where he performed leading operatic roles at Lincoln Center and Symphony Space with the New York Lyric Opera and Classical Singing & New York. He has appeared as tenor soloist with the Eureka Symphony in Handel’s Messiah and Mozart’s Requiem and as recitalist in the Trinity Bay Art & Music Festival, and has sung roles in local theater productions.  He has served as Music Director for Ferndale Repertory Theater, North Coast Repertory Theater, and Children’s Theater Humboldt.  He is Choir Director at Christ Episcopal Church, Eureka.

His specialties include chamber music, art song, musical theater and orchestral concerto piano reductions.  Two of Chernoff’s recent compositions have been premiered as part of the Trinidad Bay Art & Music Festival:  the Piano Concerto for Strings, Winds and Trumpet (2019) and the James Joyce Song Cycle (2024).

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear two Humboldt County favorites in collaboration.  The suggested donation is $20.00 per person.  There will be a reception following the concert, offering an opportunity to meet the artists.  The doors will open at 3:30 pm and seating is on a first come basis.  All are welcome!  For more information, call (707) 442-1797.

Musicians, most notably those in the classical genre, often have a particularly strong tendency to take themselves VERY seriously and seek to project their sense of superiority through any means they can…photographs being a primary avenue.

Lots of talent here and it should be an enriching and enjoyable show! These guys should indeed take themselves and their work seriously, and i’m sure they do.
