Mad River Community Hospital Suspending Labor and Delivery Services Oct 31
This press release is issued to remind the community of Mad River Community Hospital’s plan to suspend labor and delivery services effective October 31, 2024, as announced in our press release on August 21, 2024. While Mad River will no longer offer scheduled or unscheduled deliveries, the hospital will continue to provide a full range of gynecological services, including tubal ligations, hysterectomies, and laparoscopies, in partnership with Open Door Community Health Center providers.
We encourage expectant mothers to contact their OB/GYN or primary care provider to arrange for deliveries at other medical facilities, including Providence St. Joseph Hospital and Open Door Community Health Centers.
“I would like to express my appreciation to St. Joe’s for its ongoing support and commitment to providing labor and delivery services to our community,” said Melissa Long, Chief Nursing Officer. “I am encouraged by our renewed collaboration with St. Joe’s and the benefits this offers our patients.”

The County should have bought it when it was recently for sale.
The county can not keep up maintenance on roads. What makes you think they could run a hospital? Government created and chooses the continuing underfunding of maternity services that lead to this.
Well, this is special…
It is a shit time to be a Woman in Humboldt, especially a shit time to be pregnant in Humboldt…
A protest: the Women should all take a year off, and we’ll just see what is still standing…
Mad River Hospital was a poor excuse back in 2011, and it just keeps getting worse…
Somebody will have to build a specialty facility, to provide Women’s Services and Labor/Delivery, so who will it be?
Really now, is anyone working on this?
Providence will shake off the current lawsuit, pay a settlement, and stay the same. Don’t look at them to change their policies.
This is unacceptable
They threw the baby out with the bath water on that decision.
Admin failed to mention United Indian Health Services as a provider of perinatal care. A staple in the community for tribal members for fifty years. Four of their six sites offer access to prenatal care. These clinicians provide coverage at both Providence and Sutter Coast.
Also remember, while 90″ north, Sutter Coast offers a complete range of all perinatal and gynecological services without any religious influence. Far away, but closer and less expensive than going east or south. There are wonderful nurses up there too, some of whom used to work at Mad River OB.
Moonstone Midwifery is working on getting credentialed through Medi-cal. Once that happens, it will become an avenue even for those without a roll of cash to spare.
I continue to hold an iota of hope for the women of our region.
