National Public Lands Day is September 28th

Taking place on the fourth Saturday of September each year, National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest volunteer effort for public lands on a single day. Saturday, September 28, enjoy the great outdoors on a day dedicated to bringing people together through environmental stewardship, reflected in this year’s theme “Together for Tomorrow.” Event volunteers may find various opportunities nearby including interpretive trail maintenance, trash clean-ups, invasive weed removal, forest rehabilitation, and more. National Public Lands Day is also a fee-free day where entrance fees are waived at National Parks and public lands with day-use fees.

Volunteer opportunities will be hosted between local non-profit organizations and public lands agencies nationwide with service activities available locally and organized near or in the communities of Redding, Shasta Lake, Weaverville, McCloud, Dunsmuir, Mad River, and Hayfork. To register for an event, call or email the contacts below. All volunteer sites will provide a fee-free 1-day National Park access pass:

Shasta Lake – Volunteers will meet at Jones Valley Boat Ramp at 9 am and take a 1942 Historic Landing Craft to Ski Island to participate in campsite maintenance, trail clearing and driftwood stacking for burn piles. This event will conclude with lunch provided by the Shasta Dam Kiwanis Club. Contact [email protected] or 530-275-1587 to register.

Redding – Volunteers attending the annual Lower Clear Creek Greenway cleanup will meet at 9 am at Horsetown-Clear Creek Preserve Trailhead Parking. This event will conclude with a barbeque. For more information and questions, call BLM at 530-224-2100.

McCloud – Volunteers will meet at the McCloud Ranger Station at 9 am to carpool to Ah Di Na Campground for interpretive trail maintenance, and invasive blackberry and locust removal, snacks and refreshments will be provided. Contact [email protected] to register.

Weaverville – Volunteers will meet at West Weaver Creek Trailhead off Mill Street at 9 am to participate in a weed pull to remove encroaching conifer from an oak woodland. This event will conclude with a barbeque. Contact [email protected] or 530-623-6004 to register.

Hayfork – Volunteers will meet at the intersection of Post Mountain Road and Rattlesnake Road at 9 am to participate in a dumpsite cleanup. Plenty of snacks and refreshments will be provided. Contact [email protected] or 530-623-4206 to register or for details to carpool.

Mad River – Volunteers attending the annual Ruth Lake cleanup will meet at 9 am at 8990 Mad River Road at the beautiful Ruth Lake, lunch will be provided for the event. Contact [email protected] or 707-572-0724 to register.

Dunsmuir – Participants can enjoy a Family Nature Walk along the Sacramento River in Dunsmuir to learn about the history of Tauhindauli Park at 4224 Upper Soda Road. Contact 530-926-5655 to register.

National Environmental Education Foundation sponsors this annual national wide event to provide the fee-free access passes. More than 1,000,000 volunteers have participated in the cause since its start in 1994, and more federal, state, and local representatives are joining the effort.
