[Update] Highway 299 Blocked After Major Injury Collision Involving Tractor Trailer Hauling Logs

299 traffic alert featureA serious two-vehicle collision has shut down both lanes of Highway 299 near Douglas City, Trinity County, early this morning. The incident occurred approximately 5-6 miles east of Douglas City, in the area of Shannon Cove, just after 6:54 a.m. As of the publishing of this article, Caltrans District 2 confirmed that both lanes remained blocked, with traffic being diverted. According to the CHP dispatch, the eastbound lane was rendered impassable due to one vehicle going off the roadway and another sustaining major front-end damage.

Reports indicate that three people were involved in the crash. One person suffered major injuries, including a broken leg, while another had injuries to their right arm. A third individual, who was trapped inside one of the vehicles, was reported to have minor injuries. Emergency services, including fire crews and air medical responders, were dispatched to the scene.

One of the vehicles is reported to be a tractor-trailer combo hauling logs. According to the CHP log, the tractor-trailer is on the side of the roadway with logs blocking all the lanes. A loader will be needed to clear the road. Both of the involved vehicles required heavy-duty tow services.

The collision led to significant delays, and drivers were advised to use detours via Lewiston Road. Caltrans issued a traffic alert just before 8:00 a.m., confirming the blockage and urging motorists to check QuickMap.dot.ca.gov for live updates. Road crews and law enforcement are actively working on clearing the scene and reopening the roadway, but motorists should expect extended delays throughout the morning.

Please remember that this story is unfolding. Information is being reported as we gather it. However, some of the information coming from witnesses and initial official reports could be wrong. We will do our best to get the facts but, in the case that something is inaccurate, we will update with correct information as soon as we can.

Update 9 a.m.: One-way traffic control is now in place at the crash site.

Update 10:53 a.m.: As of 10:26 a.m., the CHP log states that Highway 299 has been closed again for vehicle recovery. Motorists should expect delays.

UPDATE: The roadway has reopened. Further info here:

>”… One of the vehicles is reported to be a tractor-trailer combo hauling logs.”

Yup. **
Someday, somebody… is going to figure out that a flatbed trailer hauling logs is… unsafe.

** (I really don’t know if it was the cause of the crash… but just a hunch says it was.)

Or…the other vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic?
I don’t know either. Just speculation.

Where does it say the trailer was a flat bed? A tractor pulling a trailer could very well be a logging truck.

The photo you posted was not in the article. I agree, a flatbed trailer for sure.

The tractor trailer may have picked up a load of logs in Weaverville with the intention of unloading in Eureka, and, while there, picking up a load of lumber for a back-haul to Nevada. I’m just guessing.
