Redwood National and State Parks and Redwood Parks Conservancy have selected Janine Mapurunga and Maureen McGarry for the fall 2024 Artist-in-Residence Program.

Mapurunga is a documentary photographer and filmmaker working for over 20 years in the US and abroad. “I observe life unfolding and use the camera to capture what is easily felt but difficult to portray – the extraordinary experience of being alive,” said Mapurunga. Creating imagery that conveys a sense of belonging with nature is a goal of her residency.

McGarry works primarily in watercolor with an emphasis on the natural world. “I have recently been experimenting with watercolor collage and assemblage and hope to use these techniques to add depth and perspective to my paintings during this residency,” said McGarry.

Both artists are based in California and have extensive experience creating art in their respective communities. Each artist will provide a public presentation before the end of their residency to help the next generation of artists see the parks from new perspectives.

About the Redwood Artist-in-Residence Program

The program offers eligible artists up to four weeks to pursue their art form amid the stunning landscapes of the parks. Writers, sculptors, photographers, painters, dancers, filmmakers, musicians, composers, and other visual and performing artists may apply. Artists translate the park’s purpose—enjoyment and preservation—into creations that offer pleasure and deeper understanding.

During the residency, artists have ample time to find inspiration and opportunities to interact with park staff and the public. The program includes housing and a stipend of up to $5,000 to cover logistical needs.
