Discover the World of Dragonflies with Sandra Hunt-von Arb at Arcata Marsh on September 4
Press release from the Friends of the Arcata Marsh:
Join wildlife biologist Sandra Hunt-von Arb on Wednesday, September 4 to be enlightened about “Flying Jewels of the Marsh: An Introduction to Dragonflies.” The presentation is part of the First Wednesday Lecture Series sponsored by Friends of the Arcata Marsh. This 1-hour talk will be held at the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center starting at 7 p.m., followed by a Q&A session.
Sandra will cover some of the Marsh’s most commonly seen dragonflies and damselflies (Odenates) and also will speak on the natural transition from birding to dragonfly hunting: how dragonfly ID is similar to bird ID; the importance of good binoculars; birding hot spots near water are also dragonfly hot spots; and doing both can extend your day and your outdoor season.
Sandra has worked in northern California for nearly 30 years, specializing in sensitive and endangered species. Recently she found her true passion, Odonates. In her spare time, she conducts surveys throughout California and helps organize an annual Dragonfly Blitz. She co-founded Biodiversity Education and Research Foundation, whose mission is to foster ecological stewardship through science and education. Sandra co-authored a guide with Kathy Biggs, Dragonflies (Anisoptera) of California.
The presentation will be simulcast via Zoom and uploaded afterward to the FOAM YouTube channel. For more information, contact the Interpretive Center at 707-826-2359.

What’s with all the mosquitoes??
They’re responding to warmer temps and will disappear with the cooler weather.
Yes thank you. Seems to me there’s more these past couple years than the previous couple decades.
Wet winters?
Hah! I have Kathy Biggs’s Common Dragonflies of California; it’s pretty cool. Shame I missed her talk. I’ve seen a Cardinal Meadowhawk on S. G St. and there was a big one trapped in the Valley West Dollar Tree last week, poor thing.

Yeah, I checked and it’s not up yet. Thanks. I did see some other interesting lectures, though.
