Wrong-Way Driver Crashes into Bridge on US-101 Near Herrick Avenue Early This Morning

Traffic CollisionEarly this morning, a serious car accident occurred on US-101 North at Herrick Avenue in Humboldt County involving a vehicle that was traveling the wrong way. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the driver, operating a 2014 Ford truck, collided with a bridge support pillar while heading southbound in the northbound lane at approximately 70 mph.

The crash, reported at 4:38 a.m., prompted an immediate response from emergency services. An ambulance was dispatched to the scene, and a tow truck arrived shortly after. CHP officers closed the northbound #1 lane as firefighters and other responders worked to manage the situation.

Witnesses indicated that the driver may have fled the scene on foot following the collision. The vehicle left debris scattered across the northbound lanes, causing additional hazards for early morning traffic. A black Toyota Tundra with its hazard lights on was spotted nearby, reportedly trying to slow down traffic to prevent further accidents.

CHP officers on site coordinated with the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Humboldt Tow to clear the wreckage. The investigation is ongoing.

Yikes. If the driver of the Ford truck hit the pillar at approximately 70 mph and was able to flee the scene on foot, chances are they were driving drunk.

$100 says either drunk or stolen. And now, a Ford really was found on road dead.

I was on the bridge riding north in the slow lane with friends one very foggy night and a car came out of the fog with its lights off going very fast toward us in the left lane next to us. Spooky. We would have been obliterated. What’s up with drivers in Humboldt these days? One crash after another, in town and out in the sticks.

The problem with driver’s in Humboldt is they are driver’s from Humboldt. Not a real smart group on the intelligence scale.

According to this Humboldt is just about average. A hair above. What is there possibly beneficial about insulting a whole county?

“What’s up with the drivers from Humboldt?”, asked the driver from Humboldt.

In a large city, you’ll never again see the one that cut you off. I Eureka you might run into them at Winco in a couple hours. Or getting gas.

Well I’ve never flipped or wrecked my car and I was taught how to drive in Humboldt. Most people that drive like idiots around here are from the city. Be it southern or central California, LA or San Francisco.

Remember Korina’s Axiom: “Everyone who gets in the driver’s seat automatically loses 10 IQ points, and not everyone can spare them.”

Lisa, sorry to pick nits, but it wasn’t an accident; it was a crash. ::pushes up pedantic glasses::

I like the Axiom!

Except a crash can be on purpose, while an accident is always not on purpose, yes?

“Accident” implies that it just sort of happened and couldn’t have been prevented, when 99% of the time someone did something stupid, so the preferred terms are “crash” or “collision”. It’s a more neutral term that doesn’t remove responsibility from the driver(s).

One can not cause an accident. Accidents happen. One can cause a collision…. Oops, I accidentally drove on the wrong side of the freeway and caused a collision…

Technically, they’re all called “collisions”, by state & city traffic deparments.

And yet, I still see “accident” in so many PD press releases.
