Traffic Backed Up on Hwy 199 after Fatal Crash

Fatal CrashA vehicle went off Hwy 199 at 5:14 p.m. today near the intersection with Hwy 197 and struck a redwood tree. Scanner traffic indicates that the occupant is deceased.

According to the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page, the crash occurred near mile marker 0 on Hwy 199. Smoke was seen coming from the vehicle shortly after the incident.

A caller to 911 who witnessed the crash reported being directly behind the vehicle when it lost control and left the roadway.

At 5:23 p.m., further updates indicated that CHP units requested additional support to handle the situation.

As of 7 p.m., traffic is still backed up in both directions.

Mile marker 1 on US199 would be closer to US101 than 197. So was the accident on 199 just as one “enters the trees” or was it near Jedediah Smith State Park which is near 197 and would be about mile marker 6?

Could be marker 0 on 197 just as you get off 199. Otherwise yes it would be marker 6 or 7 at Jedediah.
