Right Place, Right Time: HCSO Deputy On-Hand to Detain Person Wanted in Connection to Previous Pursuit

In a twist of fate, on May 24, a Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department deputy happened to witness a vehicle crash on Highway 101. Unknown to the deputy at the time, the Ford F150 Raptor involved in the single-vehicle collision was wanted in connection to a pursuit that had occurred five days prior.

CHP Public Information Officer Jon Clevenger told Redheaded Blackbelt that on May 19, an officer observed the Ford Raptor traveling northbound on Highway 101 north of Benbow at speeds around 100 mph. The officer attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle, but it failed to yield, leading the officer on a high-speed pursuit east of Garberville on Alderpoint Road.

The officer terminated the pursuit due to safety concerns for other motorists; however, a license plate number was obtained and a BOLO (Be on the lookout) was issued for the vehicle.

On May 24, around 5 a.m., a HCSO deputy south of Barkdull Road witnessed the Ford Raptor traveling at a high rate of speed headed southbound on Highway 101. Clevenger stated that before the deputy could initiate a traffic stop or pursue the speeding vehicle, it left the roadway, crashing through a guardrail and down an embankment. Fortunately, according to Clevenger, the [only person found at the scene] was uninjured during the collision.

According to the CHP PIO, though the driver, the only person found on scene who was later identified as Maxwell Elliot, attempted to flee, he was quickly detained by the HCSO deputy who witnessed the collision. Elliot was later released.

Vehicle recovery efforts took several hours to complete and temporarily closed the northbound lanes of Highway 101.

Luck was seemingly on the side of law enforcement that morning, as the deputy was in the right place at the right time, enabling law enforcement to detain the [Elliot] and bring the BOLO to a close.

Update: The article has been updated to clarify that while Elliot was detained, he was released at the scene.

This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information regarding either the incident on May 19, or May 24, are asked to contact the Garberville CHP Office at 707-932-6100.

Yeah. That’s one for the big house for several years. But…likely not going to happen. Unfortunately. He will just be repeating and repeating until he goes just a bit too far.

If the DA is Candace Myers she’s an incompetent idiot who will let this one fall through the cracks too. That lady couldn’t do her job if her life depended on it.

Fortunately, the driver was uninjured during the collision.

Fortunately? Not really. It would be just as fortunate for their life to end so as not to affect society or other future individuals that will run into this person.

Why stop there?! What about a virus that only targets people that think the death penalty is appropriate for speeding?

The driver, whoever that turns out to be, was doing a lot more than speeding. And speeding, if you didn’t know is a leading cause of fatal auto accidents.

A big thank you to the HCSO Deputy who witnessed the accident and caught Mr. Maxwell trying to flee. One more jackass done.

Maybe that’s the reason they let him go. He was ‘minding his own business picking berries’!

Legal action will be taken if this Article is not amended with accurate information. Please be mindful when writing about one’s character because defamation is ILLEGAL and max was at no fault or he would have been arrested and charges, neither of which happened. So you were at the scene and he wasn’t the driver? Then you must have been the driver…

Dang! What a run of bad luck! first, second, third the poor kid gets arrested for somebody else’s drugs, then mercilessly forced to drive 100 mph on 101…then, in a hurry to get to Weds. Night Bible study, some idiot driving tooo slow runs his practical Raptor grocery getter off the freaking road! Now EVERYONE is slandering the poor guy by sitting in their cars stopped staring on the highway and that tow truck making such a huge “LOOK AT ME” big deal by parking sideways on the freeway… Gawd people get a life!

Drive crazy, and eventually, you will get caught.

It’s just your turn!

Fucking idiots, and hurrisome folk should learn to drive safely and steadily, and you will get flipped off less often…

Take a hint from the blowing of horns, and remember:

I don’t drive safely because I am old, I am old because I drive safely…

Kind of like a yahoo in a black truck with a pitbull in the backgoing up Ridgewood, after blasting past me down on Broadway. I waved to him, even though I was going the speed limit. When we got to the top of the hill, he felt it necessary to flip me off. For what? Slower cars in front of him, because they were turning into side roads. I wasn’t tailgating, I was well behind him. I guess he felt it necessary to do something else stupid.
Another “bad ass in their own mind” driving a truck with loud exhaust.
