[UPDATE 8:07 a.m.] Ice on 101 Where Toyota Tundra Crashed Near Longvale North of Willits

traffic accidentThe single occupant of a red Toyota Tundra received minor injures when his vehicle crashed in icy conditions north of Willits at Longvale at about 7:42 a.m., according to reports from emergency personnel at the scene. The Incident Commander is warning all incoming emergency vehicles to be careful because of the condition of the roadway.

The vehicle came to rest in the northbound lane and traffic is moving slowly through the area. Traffic control is being set up as local volunteer fire departments arrive on scene.

UPDATE 8:07 a.m.: The Incident Commander requested Caltrans respond quickly as the “black ice” might cause another crash.

Ice like this is very hard to see in daylight, and almost impossible to see at night. Please be careful on these chilly mornings, either driving or walking on steps/slopes.

Most vehicle have an outside thermometer. It pays to pay attention to the temperature you are driving in.

Black ice is usually invisible regardless of circumstances. The only good defense is studded tires but they’re rarely needed in Humboldt. There but for the grace of God go all of us.
