Local Students Compete in McKinleyville Lions Club’s Student Speaker Contest

This is a press release from the McKinleyville Lions Club:

The McKinleyville Lions Club, chaired by Treasurer Cyndi Bainbridge, recently hosted the zone contest for the Lions Club Annual Student Speaker Contest.  Competing were the high school student winners of their respective clubs Matthew Coyle, Academy of the Redwoods,  sponsored by the Eureka Host Club; Joey Hodges, Northcoast Preparatory Academy, sponsored by the McKinleyville Club; and Sarah Suchanek, McKinleyville High School, sponsored by the Trinidad Club.

The Lions Student Speaker contest is in its 87th year and provides opportunities for high school students to improve their public speaking skills on topics important to increasing civic participation and to win cash and scholarship prizes. This year’s topic was “For a Better World – What Would You Change?”

Matthew Coyle, zone winner,  will go on to compete in the regional contest, sponsored by the McKinleyville Lions Club, on Saturday, April 6 at Morris Elementary School at 2 p.m.

The contests are judged by community members. The zone contest judges included Deborah Bushnell, Heidi Conzelmann, Diane Romberg, Trevor Sciarrotta,  and John Packer. Lions Club student speaker contest chairs included Ellen Brown, Trinidad Club, Pat Thomas, McKinleyville Club and Loretta Dulay, Eureka Host Club.
