At approximately 9:15 p.m., according to information posted on the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page, a vehicle struck a dog on Hwy 101 west of Garberville near the Sprowel Creek exit. Another fled the scene apparently uninjured.

The on-call 24 hour animal care was requested, but they are located in Arcata and the elderly female dog was badly injured.

Southern Humboldt’s vet will be closing soon and there will be no vet care closer than Fortuna.

Regardless of how the Dog got out there (stray, escape artist, irresponsible owner), I hope she fares well.

Keep an eye out for the other Dog who may now be searching for its buddy near the highway.

I agree with your comment 100% Bug. It is sad to hear Southern Humboldt’s vet office will be closing. I am sure there will be animals that will perish in an emergency due to the lack of a vet. No one wants to hit an animal, dog, cat, deer, livestrock, etc., with their vehicle. It is a very sickening feeling.
