US News & World Report Recognizes St. Joseph Hospital for Quality Maternity Care

Press release from Providence:

award flyer for maternity care presented to providenceU.S. News & World Report has named Providence St. Joseph Hospital as a 2024 High Performing hospital for Maternity Care (Uncomplicated Pregnancy). This is the highest award a hospital can earn for U.S. News’ Best Hospitals for Maternity Care.

Best Hospitals for Maternity Care is an annual evaluation designed to assist expectant parents, in consultation with their prenatal care team, in making informed decisions about where to receive maternity care that best meets their family’s needs.

St. Joseph Hospital earned a High Performing designation in recognition of maternity care as measured by factors such as newborn complication rates.

“There’s nothing that touches the heart like the sight of a new mom heading home, holding her brand new baby close as they leave the hospital,” said Interim Chief Executive and Chief Medical Officer Ranjit Hundal, M.D., Providence Humboldt County. “Our caregivers in Humboldt County strive to provide the best care possible for our mothers and newborns and are honored to be recognized among the best in the nation for our exceptional maternity care.”

U.S. News evaluated hospitals from across the nation that provide labor and delivery services and submitted detailed data to the publication for analysis; 680 hospitals, an all-time high, participated in this year’s U.S. News survey. Fewer than half – 46% – of all hospitals that offer maternity care and participated in the survey received a High Performing designation.

“Hospitals that receive a High Performing designation as part of Best Hospitals for Maternity Care meet a high standard in caring for parents with uncomplicated pregnancies,” said Jennifer Winston, health data scientist at U.S. News. “These hospitals have C-section rates that are 26% lower, and newborn complication rates that are 37% lower than unrecognized hospitals. Parents-to-be can research their local hospitals’ performance metrics for free at health.usnews.com to help them choose where to have their baby.”

The U.S. News Best Hospitals for Maternity Care methodology is based entirely on objective measures of quality, such as C-section rates in lower-risk pregnancies, newborn complication rates, exclusive breast milk feeding rates, early elective delivery rates, birthing-friendly practices and transparency on racial/ethnic disparities, among other measures.

They are recognizing the complete company across the USA. Too bad we do not receive good service like that in Eureka and Fortuna. The only high performance that I have seen in Eureka is stalling and telling patience to go home because there is not much that hospital can do. We need another hospital option in Eureka and not a public relations hospital that tells us they are doing a good job while doing they do minimal service or no service at all. Come on Supervisors help us out in holding the hospital accountable.

U.S. News & World Report is still a thing? As if anyone under 50 or so would have even heard of it much less care about what it says.

I recently had a child,
one of the first men in my community to give birth.
Thank you to all the tax payers who supported me as I strive to live my best life and claim your identity.
Thank you again, hopefully this will decrease disparity and increase uniformity

10 weeks ago, I had C1-C6 fused with hardware at St. Joseph’s Hospital. The doctor and staff were fantastic.
