In the sphere of the North Coast, where nearly every expanse is deemed rural, the essence of enchantment unfolds where the blacktop ends. Embracing a rustic existence demands a surrender of comforts, entailing prolonged journeys through winding hills, the first casualty of connectivity, and the last to witness its restoration in times of calamity. Yet, within the secluded moments off the beaten path, Mother Nature herself orchestrates the most sublime spectacles.
Living at the end of the road on the Lost Coast, resident Anna Rogers faces the challenges of rural living but reaps the rewards of life in the mist of the coast. Frequently, the Sinkyone herd of Roosevelt elk visits Rogers’ yard, and recently her rural abode offered the view of two bull elks locked in a majestic battle amidst the fog of a Thursday morning. The allure of nature rendering every tribulation a paltry offering before the grandeur of such natural theatre.
Anna Rogers, Administrative Director of Sanctuary Forest and lover of the natural wonders of the Lost Coast, shares daily delights of her world on her social media accounts.

Striking video with the clicks of dueling antlers. Elk are one species I’ve not seen at my abode two blocks from EHS.
My best times were when I lived up an old dirt road.
Wow! Are those the elks vocalizations as well?
Wow, and Wow again ! I interpret the vocalizations to be the Alcean equivalent to our ” Uncle !” . They so closely precede the rapid disengagement by the Bull-on-the-Left. Followed by such magnanimous body language by both parties ! Wow !
