Will the hundreds of wind turbines be secured to the seabed with cables for whales to get caught and snagged in? Crab pots come to mind…

Whales caught on wind turbine anchor cables?
You’re joking, right?

Shhhhh! Don’t tell anyone, but the windturbines are just a cover story. It’s all about the cables, they are a defense against Rocket Boy’s submarines.

More importantly how will it effect the futures market, stock prices, and economic interests of the Schatz Group; a multi-national corporation with as much love and adoration for our region as Maxaam I’m sure..

Bit confused how this small German company that makes tool jigs/connectors/injection molds unrelated to fiber optics that is not public/has no stock to buy benefits from this?

The fiber optic connection Humboldt -Singapore claiming to increase our speeds is odd and almost certainly the other way around.

The property at 1296 11th Street in Arcata — former site of Nilsen Feed Company — will soon be home to a major datacenter, connecting the town to a 10,000-mile-long transpacific fiber optic cable running between our coast and Singapore.

https://lostcoastoutpost.com/2020/nov/25/arcata-datacenter-fiber-optic-line/#:~:text=The%20property%20at%201296%2011th%20Street%20in%20Arcata%20%E2%80%94%20former%20site,between%20our%20coast%20and%20Singapore.
I saw them laying the cable thru Arcata. They used a boring machine, then ran tubing for the cable thru the hole. They went a certain distance than built an underground connecting point.
Don’t really see how this will effect local fisherman. Anyway the local industry is done anyway. It was destroyed years ago.
“Salmon season is closed for 2023 as the drought from recent years limited it’s ability to breed, and now there aren’t enough for commercial fishing.”

Crabbing?
The season traditionally begins Nov. 15 and runs through late June but it already had been pushed back to New Year’s Eve after three earlier delays.
This is due to Humpback whale protection.

I believe that site is the old Copeland Lumber.
The old Nilsen Feed is now a wing of Ace Hardware.

I think Nielsen used it for awhile.

There are cables that change crab behavior and migration. It is thought that subtle vibrations the cables give off somehow attract and trap them from their normal crab activities. This can cause them to not eat, reproduce, etc. Potentially creating an ecosystem collapse. Very bad for the fishery obviously, but also the environment. Idk if these projects have this potential effect, but there are other places in the world this has occured.

NSA/DIA redundant intercontinental line. Who is Internews in Arcata really? Cmon mannn, think. All right in the Arcata Raging Grannies Arcata backyard. Now that is comedy double gold. Undersea windmill cable vibrations combined with above ground blade noise disturbance result in the extinction of our elders, not the raging grannies who support bird choppers, but the whales. Truly sick.

These projects are a disaster for fish and wildlife. Watch and see.

It’d sure be nice if people saw each others viewpoint a bit. A few questions to think about that I think both sides of the political divide should consider are these:
– we will run out of fossil fuels some day (forget about climate change) and we will need an alternative power source. Isn’t it a good idea to get something rolling so we don’t have a rough landing?
– there is a chance that putting big huge windmills in the ocean will have some unforeseen effects on the ocean that is very negative. I think of dams on rivers. A carbon free reliable constant power source that did a lot to make the west liveable. Now they are the bane of every environmentalist. It could be the same with windmills, we should be careful. They are not a panacea, nothing is.

It is not a YouTuber so you might have trouble believing it, but it is a very left leaning publication, and they admit there could be risk to whales. This from 2019 and they have been working on ways to mitigate the risk to marine life, there are more whales killed by boats than wind turbines. .https://www.npr.org/2019/12/05/782694371/offshore-wind-may-help-the-planet-but-will-it-hurt-whales

How about we keep our human junk out of the ocean? These projects will do nothing to improve environment or energy efficiency, really just the opposite.

Is the concern from the fishing industry for the fish farm the risk of disease or market competition?

Also, how does the fiber optic cable impact fisherman?

It’s the fact that there will be an exchange of water with the bay. Doesn’t matter how many filters there are on the pipes, all it takes is one single fertile egg getting through and all our local fisheries are toast. This project is going to run for decades, they will need a 100% success rate of keeping one single egg from making it through the filters everyday for decades. Thats the issue

A single egg of Atlantic salmon?

you won’t be able to Trawl within a certain distance from the cable. the cable will run east-west, so it will be a major interruption in historical trawl runs.

That makes sense. Is it thought that the path will destroy the economic viability of trawling or will it just require the fishing fleet to identify other trawling runs?

Trawling destroys the natural seafloor habitat by essentially rototilling the seabed. All of the bottom-dwelling plants and animals are affected, if not outright destroyed by tearing up root systems or animal burrows.
Bottom trawlers also cause harm to other fisheries and to the marine environment by catching juvenile fish,, and leading to overfishing. Bottom trawl nets can also harm coral reefs, sharks, and sea turtles.

Yeah, I’m vaguely familiar with the problems of trawling. And I wasn’t aware it was a large part of our local fishery.

I’m just trying to understand what the supposed risks of these projects are to the fishery since it’s not an industry I have a lot of involvement with.

Fishing here locally has been in decline for years due to other factors.
I highly doubt any of those things the cartoonist mentions are going to affect anything, except peoples minds.

I just threw in the trawling thing cause the cables affecting them is a good thing.
