[UPDATE Monday] Antique Hayrake Stolen From Rio Dell Home

antique Hayrake

“Some brazen thieves came to my home…and stole my antique hayrake,” a Rio Dell resident who lives on Eeloa Avenue, Athena Egan told us. “It’s been in my family for decades.”

The hayrake was taken between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Thursday. “This hayrake is about 8 ft wide and 4 ft high,” she wrote. “It would of taken two strong men and a large trailer most likely to haul it away. A long bed truck might of managed it.”

“I’m thinking sometime had to of seen this on a trailer going down the highway.” She’s hopeful that businesses that have cameras on the streets of Rio Dell, or even going through Eureka or out Hwy 36 will check their cameras.

She checked with her neighbors but none she was able to contact had cameras.

“I made a police report,” she told us.

She’s appealing to the community to look at any cameras they might have that view the street and she’s asking the thieves, “Please return [it]. Do the right thing.” She says it can be returned with no questions asked.

If you have any information, please contact the Rio Dell Police at (707) 764-5642 or contact Athena at [email protected].

UPDATE Monday: The owner let us know that the hayrake has been returned. She said that an older woman had taken it apparently believing it was free. “She was a sweet older lady probably in her 70’s. I believe she genuinely didn’t think she was stealing. But I recommended next time she ask first.”

Im leaning towards graduation end of school teenage prank. Do the owners have any family around that age?
Id look at local social media to see if there are pics of it on local pages.
Have the ai look for any matching pics in our local zip codes.

Scrap value wouldn’t pay for the gas to haul it to the boneyard.
Somebody wanted a lawn ornament… and was willing to steal to get it.

Exactly! It’s worth so much more than the scrap metal. It’s 75 years old. But I do have the picture at the scrap yard so they can keep an eye out for it.

My bet would be on “Pickers” looking to make some $$ off the antique value of it

One of Humboldt County’s oldest maxims:
Anything that can be moved is a candidate for theft (no exceptions).

Low background steel…

(Pre WWII)

It’s worth more…

For sensitive equipment…

Like Geiger Counters…

Later steel has higher baseline radiation.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-background_steel

“Low-background steel, also known as pre-war steel, is any steel produced prior to the detonation of the first nuclear bombs in the 1940s and 1950s. Typically sourced from ships (either as part of regular scrapping or shipwrecks) and other steel artifacts of this era, it is often used for modern particle detectors because more modern steel is contaminated with traces of nuclear fallout.[1][2]”

Probably went straight to the nearest scrap metal yard…

I’d check there first…

Then check Arcata…

Hey. There are Mennonites around. They definitely wouldn’t steal that. Between 9am, and 2pm? No time for goofing around!

Thought I just saw one on Craig’s list for sale but can’t find the ad now. It was either free or for sale.

Maybe some kind friend took it home to restore it for you. Looks like it could use a friend.

Oh yeah! Must be why the surviving model T’s are all antiques rotting in a yard somewhere. Forgot that part.
