Whenever I’m crossing the street, I always find it’s a good practice to take my hat off and wave it in a circular motion over my head. Man, ’cause these idiots in their cars . . .

I do this too, except with my big white open palms. Jazz hands. I do not wait either, I make people stop, but I find it pretty obvious when they don’t see you.

Wait for the facts before assuming the pedestrian followed the known, but less-than- common sense approach the a car is bigger than a person.

Unbelievable, the picture shows the pedestrian is in the crosswalk right outside the new low rent housing. Your statement and you suck.

Just because they are in a crosswalk does not mean the driver is at fault

This keeps happening over and over again… I don’t understand why people walk out into the street just assuming cars will see them and stop for them. It’s common sense that a pedestrian will always be injured when hit by a vehicle, so why not protect yourself by being aware of your surroundings?
Also, as a driver I am constantly hyper aware when driving around Eureka or Arcata. Countless times people have walked out on the street in front of me without looking, not even a glance, two times women with their herd of children behind them like ducklings on a highway. WTF. I don’t want to hit anyone, basically ruining my day, my driving record, my conscience… forever thinking about the person I hit… no thanks Satan.

“ I don’t understand why people walk out into the street just assuming cars will see them and stop for them.“

Because that’s the minimum legal requirement for drivers and an astounding number of American drivers believe they don’t have to stop at crosswalks

Looking at the photo it appears the pedestrian was in the crosswalk…however that does not give them the right of way when the signal is red for them. It also doesn’t relieve them of the necessity to look out for traffic regardless if they have a green/walk light
When I have a green light, I always look first. If someone is not stopping I don’t just go because I have the right of way. That’s just dumb.

I’ve noticed that a small number of pedestrians will look straight ahead when crossing a street, and they will end up on the losing end they happen to meet up with a driver doing something other than looking straight ahead.

You may be hyper aware, but everyone around you isn’t, as evidenced by the driver who hit a pedestrian in a place with lots of pedestrians.

I don’t know who was at fault, but I hope the pedestrian will be ok. Ambulance going Code 3 makes me wonder how the person will fair.

The 101 being a pedestrian death trap where you’re expected to cross 3 lanes of highway traffic where drivers never stop

To emphasize, drivers do. not. stop. And a street designed for 40mph traffic, with a 30mph speed limit, in a commercial district. Caltrans makes great freeways, but horrifyingly awful streets.

Just in case anyone wondered… That is NOT a good way to commit insurance fraud…

I have had too many close calls as a pedestrian at signalized intersections. I push the button, wait for the walk signal, look for traffic, step out thinking it’s clear, and a driver approaching on a green light turns left without signaling, or looking, nearly running me over.

Another scenario is the driver approaching a red light who doesn’t stop, nor signal, while I’m in a crosswalk, facing a walk light, doing everything I can to safely cross.

Maybe some traffic enforcement would help?

If the person was in the crosswalk, then the driver is at fault for not paying attention. I sure hope the person will be ok. Not everyone who croses the street by the way is a meth head. As long as they were following traffic laws, then nobody should be insinuating. If they were not in a crosswalk, then it could be someone who should not have been in the street period!

That is not necessarily true

drivers are required to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, until said person is completely across the street or steps out of the striped markings. that is the law.

along with pedestrians being required to look both ways and only cross when safe to do so.

I have seen countless pedestrians immediately walk into the street expecting vehicles to stop on a dime, which they can’t.

follow the established rules if the road and all will be well.

Pedestrian collision with vehicle is a funny way of saying pedestrian hit by a vehicle. Especially considering theyre at a crosswalk, even if technically they didnt have the right of way its still a weird way to phrase it lol. Unless the pedestrian literally rammed the vehicle with their body… i guess thats possible

And it’s not like the vehicle was out there all on its own. A better headline might be “Pedestrian Injured After Being Struck by Vehicle Driver” Still awkward, but likely more accurate.

This is someone’s family member injured. This comment thread is just horrible, showing how little empathy and compassion we as a society have. I hope the injured person is ok..I’m sure the driver feels horrible, this is life changing for both parties and their families.

Truly. I’m so saddened with how little empathy and compassion many lack these days. It’s just a very sad reality. I hope all involved recover fully.
