The Yurok Tribe Received Over $977K for Electric Transit Vans and Charging Stations

The Yurok Tribe’s Transportation Program received $977,058 from the California State Transit Agency’s Transit and Intercity Rail Capitol Program to purchase four electric vehicle charging stations and four electric transit vans and these vehicles will be used for a permanent extension of the Yurok Transportation Program’s transit route from Weitchpec to Willow Creek and Orleans.

Expanding our zero-emissions fleet is one of the Yurok Transportation Program’s primary objectives,” said Yurok Transportation Program Director Brandi Natt. “From our new route, community members will be able to take advantage of Humboldt Transit Authority, Trinity Transit and Redwood Coast Transit Authority services to travel from the Willow Creek area to Weaverville and to the coast between Crescent City and Eureka.”

The Yurok Transportation Program applied for the funds in collaboration with the Humboldt Transit Authority and Redwood Transit Authority, which received more than $7 million to increase transit services, build new infrastructure and grow their zero-emissions fleets.

Starting on May 8, 2023, the Yurok Transit Program will begin offering the fixed route from Weitchpec to Willow Creek and Orleans. Yurok transit riders travelling from the reservation will be able to connect with the Humboldt transit system in Willow Creek and travel to Weaverville/Redding and the Arcata/Eureka area, where there is greater access to healthcare and employment opportunities. From the Willow Creek area, riders will be able to travel in Yurok Transit vans to Weitchpec, Tulley Creek and Klamath.

Two of the new, emissions-free transit vans will be based out of the Yurok Transportation Program’s Tulley Creek building. The other two vans will operate out of Klamath. Two of the electric vehicles charging stations will be installed in Tulley Creek Transportation Building. The two remaining charging stations will be installed at the Yurok Transportation Program’s soon-to-be-built transit facility in Klamath. Last year, the Yurok Transportation Program received a $1,280,000 grant from the Federal Transit Administration’s Low- and No- Emissions Program to construct the new building. The funds will also be used to purchase state-of-the-art dispatch and real-time arrival software. The Klamath transportation building will have three electric vehicle charging stations too.

It’s sickening that they want to keep their “Sovereign” status but refuse to do anything for themselves. They just hold up a “Gimme” sign with the amount they want this time and if they don’t get their way, file a lawsuit. I will never patronize any of their businesses until this behavior stops. They want their culture until it isn’t convenient. Their culture walked or rode horses and canoes before. Maybe they should go back to that if they can’t do transportation on their own. Either put in the effort or do without.

You should not believe everything you read on Facepalm.
“Producing a 75 kilowatt-hour battery for a Tesla Model 3, considered on the larger end of batteries for electric vehicles, would result in the emission of 4,500 kilograms of CO2 if it was made at Tesla’s battery factory in Nevada. That’s the emissions equivalent to driving a gas-powered sedan for 1.4 years, at a yearly average distance of 12,000 miles.”

Thanks for the fact check. I wonder if that includes the mining and transport of the materials, or just the factory emissions. Overall, you have to also consider the cost to manufacture the car, and the cost of dismantling/disposing of the car it’s replacing in an environmentally acceptable way. Then there’s the eventual removal/replacement/recycling/disposal of the battery.
Electric cars are a ton and a half heavier than their gas counterparts: [A 2011 study from the National Bureau of Economic Research estimated that a 1,000-pound (453-kilogram) increase in vehicle weight resulted in a 47 per cent increase in fatality risk.] That is the risk to riders in a lighter gas-powered car that is struck by a heavier EV. The weight also causes 20% more tire wear, and more wear on the roadway itself. The fact that some of these cars can accelerate 0 to 60 in 3 seconds is also considered a danger. Easy Grandma!
Lithium is mainly concentrated in China and Latin America. US reserves are, naturally, on sacred Native lands.
When you consider the amount of electricity needed for this transformation, and the prospect that more nuclear plants are being proposed to meet those needs, EV’s do not seem like the panacea we would be led to believe.
That’s before we even consider the road rage that will result from people sitting for a half hour waiting for their cars to recharge.

Great post, filled with interesting facts. You are correct that an all electric California economy will require lots of nuclear power.

A large decrease in Californians’ standard of living would also facilitate a transition to an all electrical economy. Don’t know if this the plan but it is, by far, the most likely result of Net 0.

Below freezing charging, bye bye lithium battery. At its roots the concept is flawed. Why would you burn a gallon of gas to produce electricity, suffer a 10% loss in transmission, and the cost of inverting to DC power when you can simply stuff the gallon of gas in your tank? By the way, why is CO2 on the radar of these chicken littles when there’s 1000 times more Argon in our atmosphere? If CO2 is such an effective insulator why do they put Argon in double and triple pane windows. Oh that’s right, Argon come from natural sources and it would be difficult taxing the stars.
